ELECTION OF MAYOR.

MR SHAW'S MEETING. Mr Shaw addressed two very largo meetings of the ratepayers last evening, one at the Round Tower of Ireland at 8 o'clock, and the other at the Odd Fellows' Avtns. at 9. At both he was warmly received, and the usual vote of confidence was carried. He stated that he thought it only i.ao to himself as well to Mr Button, who had published a letter in the " Evening Star," stating that his feelings had been very acutely wounded by the reference made by him (Mr Shaw), to his having been rocked in his cradle by his maternal relation — that ho (Mr Shaw) had not the remotest intention of wounding Mr Button's feelings. He (Mr Shaw) had for many years discarded the idea that lawyers entertained any very painful moral emotions, except in their professional capacity — but since Mr Button declared otherwise, he (Mr Shaw) was exceedingly sorry to havo referred to the fact, that he had been at some remote period rooked by his mother. Ho (Mr Shaw) had himself been rocking cradles for the past seventeen years, without any appreciable intervention of rest (laughter), aud although a little pleasantry might ariso from referring to such a fact, he felt no degradation would attach to him for such a benevolent though wearisome performance ; and ho confessed he was at some difficulty to conceive why tho fucfc of alluding to any lady rocking her infant child should be construed into an unfavorable reflection on her personal character. It afforded him some consolation, however, to think that Mr Button would in turn surmount tho agony of his feelings, as he (Mr Shaw) had beon informed, that evening, on undoubted authority, that when Mr Button first read in tho West Coast Times the report of the words which brought him such aflliction, he exolaimed with satisfaction, " This is as good as a brief for me, and I shall make use of it iv tho ' Evening Star.'
