Wreaths of smote seen out ou the western horizon last night at sunset notified the approach of a steamer, which two hours later camo to an anchor off the bar and fired a gun. As the only steamer due here is the Claud Hamilton, from Sydney, we have concluded that the new arrival is no other, and in accordance therewith have entered her as the Claud Hamilton in our shipping list. The Claud Hamilton will sail for Nelson and northern ports to-morrow morning. The p.s. Huntress left last evening for the JBullei* and other ports. She was lightly laden, and crossed the bar by beacon-light, darkness having set in before she cast oif. The only arrival of yesterday was the p.s. Tasmanian Maid, which met The Huntress just outside tho bar. She crossed in capital style and at racing speed. On the morning's* tide the schooner Aurora, bound to Dunedin, was towed out by the Challenge. The steamer Yarra also visited the roadstead, in expectation that the Claud Hamilton would sliow up. In this she was disappointed ; but for all that her jaunt outside was not altogether profitless, as her crew set to work fishing, and secured ten dozen fine cod in the short space of three hours. That smart steamer the Tasmanian Maid has returned to her old cruising ground, after a long absence at the Manukau, where she received such a thorough overhaul and refit that she may now be considered one of the most efficient vessels in the West Coast collating trade. The Maid looks quite a, new boat, having been re-decked fore and aft, fitted with now bulwarks, and painted and decorated inside and out. A comfortable house for the occupation of her officers has been built on deck, abaft the mainmast, whilst her carrying capacity has been increased by the enlargement of the forehold, which is now capable of stowing a very large cargo. She was also placed upon the slip, and lier bottom cleansed and painted. Her motive power was not neglected, as evidenced by the splendid condition of the machinery and boiler, both of which were carefully examined and cleaned, and every defect made good. "We are glad to see tho Maid and her urbane commander, Captain Scuter, back again, and hope that a prosperous cai'eer is in store for them on this coast. "We have been supplied by Captain Scuter with the following account of the Maid's passage : — " She left the Manakau on the 19th inttant, at G p.m.. with light fine weather, which changed to a strong breeze from S.E., when ihe opened the Straits. Cape Farewell passed, the weather again fell light, and continued so until her arrival at the Buller at 7 p.m. on the 21st. She then disposed of a portion of her cargo, and on the afternoon's tide of the 23rd proceeded to the roadstead, and made fast to the water logged keicL Louisa, and towed her to Beachem's Wharf, the s.s. Storm Bird having previously attempted to do so, but failed. The MaicLihen proceeded up tho coast, called at Fox's at 9 p.m. the same day, and lay there until 2 p.ra, on the 25th, having in the meantime landed a little cargo and' a few passengers. She next steamed for Greymouth yesterday, landed cargo, and coaled, and left for this port at G p.m., and after a dashing run of two hours ten minutes, crossed the bar safely. She hi ings up about fifteen tons of general rar#o, shipped at Auckland, and a few passenger*." We see by the " Lyttelton Times " that the s.s. Omeo will call at Lyttelton, Nelson and Wellington on her way rouiid the roast.
The 8.8. Beautiful alar, sailed frcm Dunedin for Westport on the 23rd inst. Ab the s.B. Otago was steaming up to the outer 'X of the new wharf yesterdny crening, an accident occurred which might have been attended with far more serious coiibcquences than resulted from it. Owing to tho very Iflri߫ent light ihowa on the wharf, ft would
appear that the structure was not sighted by those on board, until it was too late to escape running into it. A great number of people had collected to witness the arrival of the steamer, and when ifc became evident that there would be a collision, the cowd very naturally began to run to a safer place — the crash, followed almost immediately, and as soon as it was deemed safe to approach, it was seen that a large gap of some twenty feet had been made, and that tho pile 3on the opposite side had been forced out of their original position. We believe that one of the large cylinders is also broken, and that the co?t of repair is likely to be somo L2OOO. No damage seems to have been done to the Ofcngo. — "jSTew Zealand Times," September 16.
