COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

Wrai Coasc Tnim Office, Saturday Evening.

The amount of import duty collected at the Custom House to-day was L 321 16s Bel. The following list of merchandise cleared shows its distribution :—: —

Tho past week has been one of considerable activity in the import marker. Very hirgo additions having been made to stocks from the fleet of vessels that have been rapidly discharging during tho whole of the week, a considerable portion consisting of colonial produce from Tasmania and iiiterprovincial ports, say, hay, chaff, oat?, bran, pofcatoe?, &«.»., from their bulky nature for storage, were submitted under the hammer to the trudj afc chip's side. A slight decline was generally sustained, biit not further t!r;u might have been looked for. Oats realising from, 3s lid to <i 3 2.1 ; chat) 1 , Lll to Ll3 ; bran. Is 8d to Is lid ; potatoes, L 7 to L 7 15; J [art's flour, LIG 12s Gd ; Dufllold's?, LIG lOj, tho bulk being now landed higher prices arc aiked by holders, from ■warehouse. Flour is firmer and Ll7 is reluctantly taken by holders, there is a disposition to increase the figure. Second brands of lium3 aud bacon hive been placed at lower prices, slightly effecting Sinclair's and Coey's, which are now quoted afc 3 s 3d and ] s -Id ; prime butter is getting scarce, and worth Is 4d ; c.mdles have declined, Belmont's and Neva Slearinca bringing Is Id and la 2-.1 ; in wines and spirits thuro has not been many transactions — tha bulk recently landed have goue into bond ; then there is a slight downward tendency in brandies. Ale and porter, in wood mid glass, have not been operated in to an extent to effect price, it is probable tho trade will go more freely into the market during the licit week, and values will be closer defined. An active business continues to be done with the Northern G-oldfields, the amount paid for dutk-3 ai Custom hou-io for (ho woek, shows the satisfactory amount of L 3223 12s.

Mr G. W. Bixxei* reports (he following sales during the week: — Alongside ships, ex Glcncoe, from HobavtTown, and Canterbury, from Lyttelton : Potatoes, L 7 12s 6A to L 7 15s; cu-rots, LG ; onions, L 9 to LD 133; chuff, LIJ. to Ll3 per ton ; oats, 4s 2d ; bran, Is 8d to Is lld per hushell ; Hart's Adelaide flour, LIG 123 Gd ; DufliekVs, LlO 10s per ton ; fancy biscuit:-, 7d to 10J, cabiu do, 311, pilot, do, 2d per lb ; eggs, Is 7d per doz ; sft pailings, lis 6J, Gl'b do, 21s per 100 ; shingles, los per lUOO. VICTORIA.

The "Argus" of Iho 13th inst. reports : — Rather a quiet day has been passed in the import markets, but this is not more llwn might, have been expected while the mail letters were in course oi' perusal ; it i=, however, fully expected that busisu'ss will open out immediately with more activity. In brca'lstuifc, wo observe more inclination to oper.ito in flour, aud there is a probability that any parcels of Victorian placed on the market would not bo pissed over at Lll. A line of 3,000 bushels of Victorian wheat has been quitted at about <b 9.1. There is nothing doinj in either oat<3 or barley. iNlaizc hangs rather iie.irily at 2s 10 J. to o's, according to sample. dunUcs are being steadily disposod of at full vales, sales of Brandon's being freely made afc lid. Currants meet with buyers for trade purposes at 3]d. In sugar.?, we do not hear of much being done privately. A few small parcels of counters luivo been sold at L3O to L 32. ' Tobaccos do not evince much animation. Wo learn, however, of a line of fifty quartertierces E X L In ist having been quitted on private term.i. Swiss cigavs are much inquired for, but owing to the firmness of holders, wlfo refuse to accept under 40's, no sales have yet been effected. Stocks, however, both here and in the neighboring colonies, have been greatly reduced, imd there is no symptom of prices going lower. In hops wo note n considerable advance in the home market. "We extract tho following regarding the new crop from a private communication, dated 26th Ju!j r : — " llop3 are fully fifteen per cent, dearer than last month, and blight is undoubted ; many holders will not sell at any price." Thuro is still a large business doing in liquid?. S.dea of SDKZ genova are reported again to the extent of 3500 cases at up to 10s. V. K. and Co. is also beginning to be looked after ; wo hear of 700 cases having been placed at 8s 6 I, and somo largo transactions aiv, moreover, said to bo pending in tliis brand, Ifennessy's easo brandy has baen in request ut advanced rates; nearly ono thousand cases have changed lmmU at 25s Gd, and holders refuse to ecll more under 265. Trado parcels of Hitman's alo find buyers at Ss sd, and a line of fifty hogshoads was disposed of at a price sustaining tliis figure. A parcel of Bass's ale has been placed at L 8 ss. The Han*, tho first ship of tho season, with new teas, from Foo-ehoo, arrived at tho lleuda this morning, and will be berthed alongside tho Ilobson's Buy .Railway Pier. Samples of tho cargo will bo on view to-morrow at tho rooms of the auction cor. The entire cargo will bo offevod for salo on Friday,
