THE AUCKLAND GOLDFIELD

The Provincial Government of Auckland have proclaimed the Thames district a goldfield under the Act. The following latest particulars are taken from the " Southern Cross" of Saturday last, August 3rd : —

THE KARAKA RUSH.

August 2, 5 a.m.

1 arrived here last evening by the steamer Enterprise .No. -2. Nothing has yet been done as to the gold itself that would tell you more than you now know ; •but somo of the prospecting party who were loft here by Mr Mackay came in during the night, and they roport one place as very satisfactory. No licenses will be issued until Monday.

The diggers have been warned off by Te Moananui ; but it is thought the matter will not he of much account.

All wlio come here must bring tents, tools, and rations. The diggings will be "sluicing," but they must first be prospected. A fatal accident has already occurred. A man named Prince, a '' darkey." was drowned on Wednesday, in the Thames, while going with two men who had come down from JTopu to the diggings. Small stuff, I2in. wide and. lin. or \\m. thick, is wanted for sluice boxes. There is none here.

Mr Mackay, the Commissioner, wiil have the channel staked to-day, ns a guide to vessels coming in. In coming in the* stakes must be kept on the left or land side.
