DUNEDIN.

The Otago " Daily Times" of the 10th inst. reports : — Nothing in the private transactions of the past day or two, either in the import market or outside, has possessed any interest. The' little improvement in country trade noticed a few days since has not been maintained, in consequence of tho impracticability of despatching goods to many parts, while' both for town requirements and coastwise but small parcels lmve been making. A good attendance mustered at Messrs M'Landross, Hepburn, and Co.'s rooms, this afternoon, attracted by the sale of sugars, ex Jessie Kelly. The competition for tho sound portion of the cargo was fair, and only one or two small lots failed in reaching the reserve, medium class sugars bringing proportionately better prices than either high or low qualities ; the finest white sample realised L425s to Lll ; second whites bought in at LiO ; best yellow and grey crystals fetched L37t0L36; darker ditto, L 35 ; fair counters, L33to L 32 lus ; browns, L3O. Tho rates obtained for the sweated and damaged portions of the cargo, sold on account of the concerned, were unusually good.

NOTICE. OWING to an error in the circular which was issued respecting the proposed ASSEMBLY BALLS, it has been considered advisable to notify by advertisement that the first of the series will take^ place on THURSDAY EVENING NEXT, the loth inst., at Hansen's Ball-room, Sewell street. It is very desirable that all replies to circulars should be sent in to the Secretary not Liter than next Wednesday morning. In the absence of the treasurer, Mr Sale, subscriptions will be received and tickets issued by Mr Gilles, who has kindly consented to act for him. 9820
