THE AUCKLAND GOLDFIELD.

The Provincial G-overnnient of Auckland have proclaimed the Thames district a goldfield under the Act. The following latest particulars are taken from the " Southern Cross" of Saturday last, August 3rd : — THE KARAKA RUSH. August 2, 5 a.m. I arrived here last evening by the steamer Enterprise No. 2. Nothing lias yet been done as to the gold itself that would tell you move than you now know ; but some of the prospecting party who were left here by Mr Mackay came in during the night, and they report one place as very satisfactory. No licenses will be issued until Monday. The diggers have been warned off by Tc Moananui ; but it is thought the matter will not be of much account. All who come here must bring tents, tools, and rations. The diggiugs will be "sluicing," but they must first be prospected. A fatal accident lias already occurred. A mau named Prince, a " darkey," was drowned on Wednesday, in tho Thames, while going with two men who had come down from Kopu to tlie diggings. Small stuff, 12in. wide and lin. or l-fin. thick, is wanted for sluice boxes. There is none here. Mr Mackay, the Commissioner, will have the channel staked to-day, as a guide to vessels coming in. In coining in the stakes must be kept on the left or land side. The following official report upon the Wahnea district for the fortnight ending the 3rd inst., was forwarded to the Government by Mr Warden Keogh :—": — " I have nothing new to record since the date of last report. The workings at Quinn's Terrace (Piper's Flat), and on the Fourth Scandinavian Terrace aro progressing steadily. The population at Chesterfield has diminished to those absolutely at work. I cstimnto the total population of the district at 5000, distributed as under — Waimea, 700 ; back country, including Callaghan's, Foxes, &c, 600; Stafford Town, 300 ; Ballarat Hill, 200 ; Piper's Flat and adjacent a\ orkings, ] 200 ; Scandinavian Lead, 800 ; Senpoiut and beaches, 600 ; Chesterfield, 600 ; of the nbovo number 700 are following pursuits other than mining. During the fortnight I. have adjudicated upon 35 cases in court. No field cases were heard. AVcld street would be greatly benclltled by a visit from the Inspector of Nuisances, proTiding he would notice and cause to be romoved several casks ot' rotten omnges, which have been dopositc.l in the roadway in front of tho West Coast Times Hotel by some inconsiderate person, utterly regardless of sanitary consequences. The eflluvi.i urising from putrid fruit is very offensive. As a feverbreeder it has no equal, and wo therefore hopo the nuisance will by immediately looked to by the Inspector.
