THE SECRETARY (DESIGNATE) FOR THE GOLD FIELDS.
The following correspondence appears in late numbers of the "Lyttelton Times:"—
TO THE EDITOB OF THE LYTTELTON TIMES. Sir, — In your leader of Thursday's issue you state that Mr Bonar was the almost unanimously elected chairman of tho first City Council of Hokitika. This is incorrect, as Mr Bonar on that occasion had only a majority of one over Mr Shaw. Mr Bonar cannot be considered to represent Hokitika in the City Council, inasmuch as there were only two hundred names on the electoral roll at the time of his election. He has, moreover, been called upon to resign, in a memorial signed by nearly seven hundred of the present ratepayers of Hokitika who are now electors. Your obedient servant, PONTOON.
