RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before Q. G-. FitzGerald, Esq., R.M.) Friday, December 28.

Drunkenness. — James Connell, William Hamilton, Francis Bowler, and Stephen Parker were charged with this offence and respectively mulcted in the sum of ss, in default of payment twenty-four hours' imprisonment.

Obtaining Goods by False Pretence 3. — Daniel M'Kay, on remand from the 30th of last month, was again placed in the dock charged with obtaining goods under false pretences, but owing to the non-attendance of the prosecutor, and the non-arrival of some important papers from Melbourne, ho was discharged.

Embezzlement. — Andw. Sycamore, charged with embezzlement, was remanded till this day.

Disorderly Conduct. — Francis Bowler and Stephen Parker, charged with disorderly conduct, were respectively fined 15s, in default of payment forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Joseph Locketl, charged with the like offence, was remanded till this morning. Lunacy. — Bridget M'Mahon mid Ned Brennan, charged with being of unsound mind, were, in accordance with the evidence of Drs Riley and Dormott, discharged: Donald Robertson, charged with " a similar affliction, was committed to the Hokitika Hospital. Burglary and Larcexy. — James Moriarty alias Trotters was again placed in the dock, charged with these offences, and on the application of the police he was further remanded till the 3rd January. Larceny. — Richard Quinin and Robert Rankin were charged with the larceny of a meerschaum pipe and match box. The case was clearly proved against the prisoner Quinin, and he was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard labor. The prisoner Rankin was discharged. Felony, &o.— John O'Neill, Thomas Young, Archibald Cameron, and Samuel Bryson were severally charged with frequenting a public place with intent to commit a felony, and on the application of the police they were remanded till this day. The Court was then adjourned till 11 a.m. this morning.
