This Company has been formed for the purpose of supplying the town of Hokitika with Gas.
From the report of the sub-committee appointed to ascertain the probable number of houses in which gas would be used in the town, it appears that about 300 houses in Revell street alone, averaging 10 burners to each house, or 3000 burners in all, would avail themselves of the great advantages bf gas over all other artificial lights, so soon as the main pipes are laid. The Company propose in the first instance to lay the main pipes only in Revell-street, with a view to increasing their plant and extending the pipes to every street in Hokitika in the course of a few months. From the most careful calculations as to the cost of plant, coals, and working expenses, the Company have every reason to believe that the undertaking will prove not only highly advantageous to the inhabitants* of Hokitika, but also to the shareholders. The Provisional Committee reserve 100 paid-up shares to meet the preliminary expenses incurred by them in inaugurating the Company. Every care will be taken to secure the plant at as cheap a cost as will be consistent with the efficient working of the Company, and the proper supply of good materials. Tenders have been invited from Melbourne, Sydney, and Nevr Zealand, and the Committee anticipate that they will be prepared to commence operations by the Ist of January next.
