MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
At a meeting of the Hokitika Municipa. Council, held on Friday night last, ther were present Crs Clurk , Cumminsr, Anderson' Fitzsimmons, Williams, Ecclesfield, Hungerford, and the Chairman. The Town Clerk and Town Surveyor were also in attendance. A letter was read from the Town Surveyor, referring to a certificate book, &c. The Couni cil received the letter, but were unanimous in the expression of their opinion that the certificate should be written on foolscap-sized paper, and not by means of a printed form. A letter, from Gt. S. Sale, Esq., promising to communicate to "the* Government the tenor of the resolution passed by tin; Council at the lust meeting, respecting the removal of houses standing on Hamilton street at its junction with Revell slreet, was read and received.
A letter from Jno. Wliittaker, asking for au extension of time for finishing contract for formation of the Empire Right-of-way was read, and the extended time granted. A letter from Thos. Stokes, intimating that the price of the Corporation seal would be Ll7 10a, was read ami received.
A communication from Mr Whall, M.P.C., promising to use his best endeavors to procure the appointment of a District Court Judge, was read and received.
Cr Williams gave notice of liis intention to move, at the nest meeting of the Council — " That immediate 6teps be taken for the procuration of a suitable supply of water."
The Town Clerk then read lus report, whereby it appeared that the assessors had handed in their roll, and that the valuation of properties liable to assessment was L9O. Ci* Hungerford then moved— "That the Town Clerk be instructed to advertise for a Rate Collector to combine the office of Inspector of Nuisances, salary to be fixed by the Council prior to election." Seconded by Cr Fitzsimmons, and carried. •
Cr Cumming moved — " That the report of the Town Clerk be received." Seconded by Cr Clarke, and carried.
A letter was read from Me Win. Robinson, complaining that Mr Horneck had erected a building in Tancred street, which projected eight inches ou the said street. The Town Clerk was instructed to write to Mr Horneck, requesting him to remove the encroachment. • The Town Surveyor's report was brought up and adopted. The report of the Public Works Committee and the Financ e Committee were ordered to lie upon the table. Cr. Cumming then moved — " That tenders be invited for the keeping in repair all streetß and footpaths already made, os well as keeping the channels clear, gravel to be provided at — per load, same to be laid down as the Surveyor might direct in Revell Btreet, as far as tho old Hospital ; Camp street to the beach; all along Wharf street; and a footpath by Gibson's Quay.'"
Seconded by Cr Clarke, and carried. Cr Clarke gave notice of his intention to moye — "That the Town Clerk be instructed to write to G. S. Sale, Esq., re. questing that au efficient lifeboat be procured for this port and Greymouth. Also, that Manby's Patent Apparatus be procured for the use of the above ports." Permission was given to Messrs Turnei*, Fitzsimmons, and Ferguson, for the use of a piece of land at the north, end of Revell street, for the purpose of celebrating Christmas sports. Tlio Council then went into a Committee of the whole, to fix the rate, and the appointment of a Collector and Inspector of Nuisances. Ou the Council resuming the following report was brought up : — " That the general assessment rate be Is in the pound, and the special rate Is, to be collected half-yearly. Tnat a Rate Collector, to embody the office of Inspector of Nuisances, at a salary of L 250 per annum, be appointed, such officer to find two sureties of L 250 each."
The Town Clerk was instructed to telegraph to the Superintendent, in accordance with the 26th Climse ot the Municipal Ordinance, specifying the fixed rate. The Council then adjourned for one week.
