About sun down last evening a column of smoke seen on the western horizon gave notice that a steamer was approaching. This was verified shortly after by the appearance of our old friend, the Gothenburg, which ran a short distance past the port, then turned, and and steamed slowl> along the beach in about seven fathoms, finally dropping anchor in her usual holding ground abreast the bm\ As seen in the gloaming her deek9 seemed ahvo with passengers. At eleven o'clock last night the loud bang of a cannon was heard in tho roadstead, which, from its peculiar ring was at once recognised a 9 proceeding fiom the steamer Bruce, and as tho weather was clear the little vessefwas easily made out by the aid of nightglasses, riding at her anchor. She ran in" on this morning's tide, and will sail positively for Fox's River and Buller this afternoon.

The cutter Elizabeth sailed from Sydney, and cleared Port Jackson Heads on the 28th with freßh N.E. breezes and fine weather. On the following day the wind fell light, but freshened again on the 11th, and in a few hours was blowing a hard gale from east. Canvas wa3 reduced to double-reefed mainsail and foresail, under which she head-reached for three days, when on the 3rd inst the gale veered to S.E. and increased to a hurricane, raising a tremendous high, cross sea, and compelling a further reduction of canvas to balance-reefed mainsail. She was thus hove to, and remained by the wind making capital weather, for although the &eas were mountainous the lively little craft rode over them like a gull, and hardly shipped a bucket of water. On the 6th the gale moderated in a shift of wind to the north, and the cutter was kept away on her course under all sail, and during the remainder of the passage experienced light N. and N.E. winds and fine weather. She sighted the New Zealand coast on the 11th, but owing to light airs and cahns was unable to fetch in until the 13th, when she anchored off the bar at midnight, and next day was towed inside by the Challenge. The Elizabeth brings a full general cargo. The schooner Glengarry arrived from Greymouth yesterday -with a cargo of coal consigned to Messrs Chesney & Co. The p.s. Yarra was laid up yesterday whilst undergoing some necessary repairs to her starboard sponson frame which received slight damage whilst she was lying alongside the Claud Hamilton on Saturday last. She is again in first-i-ate order and ready for work. MrW. S. Lockhart has received advices from Sydney via Wellington, which contain amongst other items the intelligence that tho brigantine Jane Lockhart, which left this port on the 18th ult., arrived at Sydney on the Ist insfc. She was to leave again for Hokitika in a few days. The bar coidd scarcely be worked under more favorable circumstances than those of yesterday, as the weather was delightfully fine and calm, and as far as eye could reach in the offing hardly a ripple agitated the sea's smooth surface. Unfortunately, however, the tuoboats found little to do," as only two small ves° sels arrived and one sailed. These were attended to by the Challenge, which towed out the cutter Hope, bound to Fox's River, and fetched in the schooner Glengarry, from Greymouth, and the cutter Elizabeth, from Sydney. The Challenge reports the channel to be in in good vrorking order, as at high tide she found eleven feet of water therein.
