COMMISSIONER'S FLAT, KANIERI.
(from a coreesfondent.)
. December 12. I his has been quite a gala day amongst the residents on this flat, as the christening of Messrs Rtes and party's engine and claim was performed, and Miss llees daughter of L. Rees, Esq., barrister, had the honor of smashing the usual bottle of champagne and naming the company the •'Try Again," after which our worthy Warden, C. C. Schaw, Esq., made an eloquent speech to the effect that be was highly pleased at the plucky manner in which the present shareholders put the engine, on what he might term untried ground. Then the usual toasts, the first of which was " Success to the Try Again Company," were given and responded to in a very enthusiastic manner. The Company provided refreshments for those present, which were fully done justice to, and I am happy to say that everything went off without a single hitch occurring. The claims on the north-east corner of the Government Reserve are now getting aood gold. One claim, "Star of the West,' 1 better known as " Willoughby's," have- becu dividing the handsome return of Lls per man per week, clear. Cowan and party have also been realising very good wages paying about Lfcs to LlO per man per week.
S ad<n and party have just touched payable wash, prospect ldwt to the dish. This lead must from its direction run through the ground granted to the*'Hit-or Miss" Company. Grant and party have been getting about L2O per man per week, but are likely now to be stopped on account of water, as the Independent Company and- Waterwheel Company being nearly worked out, will soon cease pumping. The Kanieri Steam Drainage Company, who have been recently granted anacre-and-a-half lease, have ju.it opened out the face on the big lead, prospect 1 dwt to l£ dwt to the dish; depth of washdirt, 8 to 10 feet ; width, about 60 to 70 feet ; (this ground adjoins that of the Hit-or-Mlss Company), and there is not the slightest doubt, providing the weather keeps fine, that a large rct'irn will be re-porti-d next week. The present shareholders in this company are so satisfied that they have withdrawn the remaining unsold snares.
