West Covst Times Office, Friday Evening.

The amount of import duty collected at the Custom Houße to-day was L 356 17s. 2d. The following list of merchandise cleared shows its distribution : —

In the import market, business has been very active, and on the whole satisfactory to importers. A considerable quantity of merchandise, consisting principally of goods in constant demand, having been landed during the week, a good portion of which, to facilitate prompt business, have been sold alongside by auction, with good results. Reports from tho new goldfields on the coa6t northward has not only maintained, but has given an additional stimulus to tho activity with wholesale houses noticed in our last. Should the accounts continuo favorable, our market will be frocly drawn upon, owing to the facility for shipping and good general stocks held here. Wines and spirits have been in good demand. Brandy in bulk has been placed freely, without alteration in price. Case brandy not so firm. Geneva and wliisky in good demand. Porter in glass in good supply ; for Byass' 13s 6d, and Blood's 14s 3d per doz. have been realised for parcels ; for the latter 15s is now asked. Good bottltd ale is scarce. Flour remains near as J»*t quoted, with & tendency to flmne»9. A

small parcel of Hart's Adelaide sold al ship's side for Ll6 7s 6d per ton. Lute ad> ices from <ho Australian markets hare imparted a buoyancy to this staple. Oats continue in good supply, ruling from 6s to 6s 6d per bushel. Barley 5» 6d per bushel. Bran has been sold at 2s 7d per bushel. Polatos have como forward freely, realising LG (o LS pur ton. New potalos, ex Isabella, Lll to L2O per ton. Provisions iv good demand. Hams, bacon, and checdo have gone into consumption freely. We hear of .a sale by one house of s>ixty cases bacon (Sinclair & Cocy's) at Is Id per lb ; also 100 cases Cheddar cheese, at Is 4£d per lb. Sinclair & Cocy's hams are worth Is 5d ; colonial hams, Is. A parcel of colonial hams and bacon have been sold at lid. Butter lias come forward freely, meeting with veady sa'e at Is 4d to Is 5d per lb. There is a disposition to hold for a better price. Candles urc unaltered. Neva stearines, Is 2d to Is 3d ; Belmonts Is 2d ; light weights unsaleable. Dried fruits in fair supply, with the exception of dried apples, for which lid to Is is asked. Oilmen's stores are plentiful, but not firm.

Extensive sales of soft goods and drapery have been held during the week by Messrs Sprot & Craig, G. W. Binney, and D. Jones & Co., showing from the- satisfactory results a good market.

Mr G. W. Binney reports having sold, on the wharf, ex Mary, chaff, Ll6 lls per ton ; oats, 53 2d per bushel ; Blood's stout, 14s 3d per doz. Also, Hart' flour, Ll6 7s 6d per ton ; Californian do, Lls 2a 6d ; bran, 2s 7d per bushel ; potatos, L 5 15s ; Whybrovr's pickles, 13s ; &c., &c.

Messrs Carey & Grilles sold the cargo of the Isabella, realising for T. & G. kauri pine, 21s 6d ; sli ingles, 20s ; bricks, L 8 per 1000 ; sweet biscuits, 77s per cwt ; cabin do, 275. New potatos, Ll4 to L2O per ton.
