Tuesday's " Grey River Argus" says : — "The reprehensible prank of personating a detective was perpetrated the other day by a mau named Richard Hare, a miner," last working ab the Teremakau. It appears that he had, for no o-tensible reason, summoned the acsisttnco of several persons "in the Queen's name," and stated lie Tra3 a detective. Ho finally found his way over to Cobden, and there called at the police came, and stated he had been sent by Detective Eowley to give information of his having been ' stuck up,' as lip alleged, on the road from the Teremakau. His statements were, however, po contradictory, and his manner bo strange that Sergeant Mayo was induced to mate enquiries, the result of which was the man's apprehension under tlie Vagrant Act. He was brought up before Mr Kynncrsley, R.M., yesterday, and in defence stated that he load been drinking freely, and could not account for his strange behaviour. As the prisoner was favorably known to several parties in Cobden, and ifc appeared that he had not personated tho police for any ulterior purpose, lie was fined 20s fur being drunk, and dismissed with a caution."
