VICTORIA.
The " Argus" of the 3rd instant says :—: — "We note a manifest improvement in the aspect of the import markets to-day. In the market for breadstuff's there is a healthier feeling abroad. Trade sales of first Adelaide brands have been more readily effected at Ll3 and though limited in extent, they have been more numerous than for some time past. Country brands are still dull at Ll2. Wheat also begins to attract more attention. A parcel of 2000 bushels of sound Chilian was quitted at 4s 6d, and some 1600 bushels of Adelaide were placed at about ss. Maize is heavy lit 4s. A. rumor was current of the sale of about a thousand bags, at an improvement, but we could not trace the sale. Teas are in very considerable request. Of the Ellida's cargo, further sales to the extent of 800 packages are reported. Medium congous at about Is 8d are the qualities most wanted. Fine congous and ordinary descriptions are quite neglected. A few small parcels of ration teas have been quitted at Is Id to Is 3d. Malt is gradually getting more iuto favor. Wo hoar of a bin of about 2000 bushels having been quitted in a line at 9s 6d. Sales of currants have been made at 4d to 43d. A shipment of ling fish has been disposed of at close on to 5d per lb. For kerosene oil the demand has very much slackened, owing to the artival^f the Malta (a day or two ago) with 4000 cases, and the Tanjore to-day with nearly 12,000 case 3; business has been confined to the disposal of a few trifling tracte lots, at 3s 4£d for best brands, and 3s l£d for second qualities. Woolpacks are occasionally asked for, but as the demand now is merely to meet what may be required before the season closes, sales are trifling, and as holders are anxious to quit, prices have become very irregular, sales being effected at from 3s 7d down to in one instance 3s 4£d. A shipment of eighty pockets of 1865 hops was placed -in a line on private terms. A consignment of about fifty hhds Marten's dark brandy (old) has been closed up at 63 3d. Sales of Eclinond's pig brand of bottled stout are reported at 10s 6d." The " Age" of the sth inst. reports —" Business in the import market has been very limited. The transactions have baen few and unimportant; there has been enquiry for several articles, bnt at present it has not resulted in business. We hear of no transactions in tea, and for sugar there has been very little enquiry privately. The Adriatic's and Isabella Hercus' cargO3, are botli advertised for sale on Wednesday, but we learn that the former one is withdrawn for the present. The cargo of the Duchess of Lancaster is consigned to the Sugar Company, and we understand is composed of refining sorts. The arrival of the Malta and the Tanjore, with large quanti_ ties of kerosene oil, has caused a little en quiry for this article at lower rates, but the only sale we have heard of is 500 cases ex Tanjore, at 2s 10^d for an outside brand, which is about equivalent to 3s for Downer's and Cozzens's. Breadstuff's are without alteration in price, and extreme dulness reigns throughout the flour and grain markets."
