Second Day.

The Victoria Racing Club's SpringMeeting was resumed on the 2nd iust. from the previous day. The attendance of visitors was larger than has probably ever been known on a Friday in the annals of the Victorian turf. The weather was remarkably fine. The racingwas very indifferent, the bulk of the contests being manifestly such in name only, owing to the extreme inequality of the competing horses. But, unfortunately, the most disagreeable feature of the proceeding remains to be told. The starter, Mr Keighran, either under the influence of hot temper, or some other motive, which he alone can explain % despatched the horses in one event — the LSO plate — upon terms so unequal as to deprive Mr L. L. Smith's filly, Lancashire Witch, of any chance of securing the stake. This circumstance is the more to be regretted, inasmuch as the subsequent ranning of the filly all but demonstrated that, had she got away with anything like a fair start, she must have been the first to pass the judge's chair. The action of Mr Keighran in this matter gave rise to very strong expressions of dissatisfaction on the part of the spectators, and but for the presence of the police, would in all probability have produced a serious riot. An almost universal demand was made that the race should be run over again, and as the little boy who rode the filly came up to scale he was saluted with loud cheers. Another occurrence which caused general regret was that Mr C. B. Fisher's fine colt, Maribyrnong, whilst making an excellent race for the Derby, broke the small bone of his near fore-leg, and thus, in all likelihood, closed for ever a turf career which was but just opening. Whilst mentioning this casualty, it may not be amiss to state that Mr Watson's Minstrel was destroyed yesterday morning, in consequence of an injiry to his spine, received whilst running for the Cup on the preceding day.
