The amount of import duty collected at the Custom House to-day was Ll2B 7s Id. The following list of merchandise cleared shews its distribution : —

We have to note a quiet week with the wholesale and import houses, the very severe weather prevalent on the coast, and tho state of the entrance bringing shipping matters almost to nil. The improvement on this st.ite of affairs, concurrent on the cessation of fhe gale, and a good entrance, was fully realised on Friday by the " ins and outs." Most of the car^os laying outside having been safely brought alongside the wharf, considerable activity may be looked for during the coining we>k. No heavy sales have taken place at the auction mart*, nor are we cognisant of any private transactions that would ulter our la^t quotations. Messrs M'Landress, liepb'irn and Co. have held a three days sdle of the stock of Messrs Hawkes and Strouts, who arc retiring from business in Hokitik \ ; t!ie result has been most satisfact'in .
