BERLIN.

August 25. The total of the war expenses for which Prussia must .be reimbursed amounts .to 62,500,000 tlialers. The following is from the " Moniteur Praasien" :—": — " The ' Gazette de la Croix,' in its articles of the 24th and 25th August, makes use of expressions on the 'matter of the origin of the present kingdom of Italy and of its late military-successes, which do not agree with' l.istorical facts, and speaks slightingly of the legitimate efLrts of the Italians to secure unity ;" and the " Moniteur" shows that the " Gazette" does not understand the meaning of the new civilisation and reorganisation of Italy. The " Monituur" further observes that "the assertions of the ' Gazette de la Croix' are not conformable with the realities of the situation. Italy has been a faithful ally oi Prussia during the last war, and that ought to be sufficient to make the ' Gazette' hold towards her language such as a faithful and powerful ally has a right to expect from a Prussian newspaper."

August 26.

The reply of the King to the deputation from the Chamber bringing up the address, was impromptu, as follows : — "The Government has never denied to the Chamber the right to discuss the Budget. The bill of indemnity asks, in regard of a certain course which had to be taken, an accordance which unfortunately could not be obtained earlier, and for which case' the constitution had not at all provided. So, then, this case presenting itself, the King, for the maintenance of Order in the state, was obliged to act as he had clone. But a like conflict is impossible after receiving from the Chamber such an address, which in its conclusion embodiis all that the

King could desire. 1 '
