Sergeant Morris, of the mounted police, has accidentally shot a man named Morris, near Madinelong.
Last night the police arrested a butcher named Henry Scot, for the Sussex street murder. A portion of the murdered woman's clothes were found in the prisoner's box, and some articles of dress had been pawned by him. There is a strong chain of evidence against him. There was a private hearing of the case to-day, and it was adjourned for a week. The prisoner is reported to have a wife in Melbourne, - but he lived with the murdered woman.
A rush to Hokitika has set in. Trade is unaltered. Maize is steady at 4s.
