StrccESS in Life. — There is no greater ob> _ stacle in the way of success in life than trusting'for something to turn' up, instead of going to work and turning up something. A Frightful Contingency. — A farmer from the neighborhood of Galston took his wife to see the wonders of the microscope, w^iich happened to be exhibiting in Kilmarnock. The various curiosities seemed to please the good woman very well, till the animalcula contained in a drop of water camo to be shown off. This seemed to poor Janet not so very pleasant a sight as the others. She . sat patiently, however, -till the "watertigers," magnified to the size of twelve feet, appeai-ed on the sheet, fighting with their usual ferocity. Janet now rose in great tregidation, and cried to her husband, " For guxlesake, come away, John." "Sit still, v oman," said John, ' " and see the show." " See the show ! — gude keep us a', man, what wad come o' us if thae awfu' like brutes wad break oot o' tb^e water ?"
Hoee Snakes.—^Hardly a day passes but we hear of saake3 being killed. One ugly customer was despatched a few days ogo / on the Drysdale road, which, on measurement proved to be nearly four feet in length. On the 18th instant, a gentleman residing at Turkeith saw fourteen, out of which number he killed no less than eleven, none of them being less than three feet long. A lady writing; says " I would not believe Edmund when he told me, so lie said if I would go with him he would shew them to me. I went with him, and ho had shewed me five, and was about looking for the others when he trod on a live one, which flew at him, and put out its tongue at him." Now, this was highly indecorous on tbe part of his snakeship ; if he had made a face it would have been bad enough, but to put out his tongue in the presence of a lady — oh, shocking ! , One of the snakes killed was a black, the others all brown. All were killed within' a mile of tho house. *Tho same gentle* man also killed two f about a month ago. Kealh/, Turkeith must be a pleasant place to live in. — ," Geelong Advertiser," Sopt. 27. Eip Tan Winkle. — TheJ" Home News " of 26th July states, that Mr Jefferson's, health requiring a sea voyage, that popular actor has returned for a short time to America.

Professor Agassiz caysjvthe general impression in regard to the Amazon Eiver is very erroneous, not only in regard to the climate of: tbatf region, which he had been informed was unhealthy^ but also as to its fertility.
