Thursday, Sept. 20. Another effort is to be made to-night to restore the state aid question to the noticepaper. A number of forged notes on the Bank of New South Wales are in circulation in the northern districts. The supposed forger has been captured. The markets are very inactive. . Breadstuffs are dull and price easier. The Tuisco, from San Francisco, has brought 7814 bags of wheat and twentyone cases of tobacco. The Rangatira sails to-morrow, and there will be no steamer on Saturday. The wool sales were inanimate. Scoured wools were neglected ; greasy brought SM to. ]0d; fleece, 15fd to 17H; scoured, 17fd to 20d; handwashed,"lo£; sheepskins, 4£d to 7f d. - Friday, Sept. 21. The commission to inquire into the subject, of the Cawarra's wreck commenced taking evidence to-day. In the Assembly, -the Colonial Distillation Bill passed its third reading. Mr M'Pherson's motion for the resumption of state aid to religion has been restored to the notice-paper in the Assembly, as has also the Governor's Salary Reduction Bill. The state aid question came on for discussion this evening, and a motion is now before the House to adjourn the debate for a month, in order to make a call of the House on the subject.

8 p.m. In the Assembly the state aid question has been postp6ned for two months, and the Governor's Salary Reduction Bill has been thrown out. Mr Stewart has been elected for Sydney , unopposed, and took his seat to-day.-The Sir John Lawrence has cleared for

London with 1249 bales of wool, 218 bales of cotton, 173 casks of tallow, 13,379 glides, 10,000 soys., 6548 ounces of gold, and sundries. Sailed.— H.M.S. Challenger, for Auckland.

Saturday, Sept. 22. A gentleman, supposed of the name of Graves, drove in a cab to the South Head this afternoon, left his hat and watch on the cliffs, and jumped off. ~ The body was recovered soon afterwards.

The Due de Penthievre and the Count de Beauvoir arrived here yesterday from Tasmania. The wild Scotchman has been convicted - on two charges of Joushranging at Maryborough, and sentenced to twenty-five years' imprisonment. A stonemason was jammed to death today whilst at work at Messrs John Frazer and Co.'s stores, in York street.

The auction sales have been postponed on account of Mr Dean's iuneral.

Maize is very dull. A sale is reported to-day at 3s 7d per bushel. It has been raining here again to-day. < The Prince Regent, from Wellington, brings Hokitika dates to the 10 th iust. ' Sept. 2.5. The Jessie Kelly's cargo of Mauritius sugars was sold at auction to-day, and the following prices realised : — Snowdrops, L 42 to L 43 12s 6d ; white crystals, L 39 to L4O 15s ; straw crystals, L 37 to L3B 10s ; fine counters, f L3B to L4O 2s 6d ; yellow, L34ssto L 36 15s. Java rice fetched L 24;2 4; white pepper, B£d ; Chilian flour, Ll4. The commercial depression is increasing. Messrs Benett, hoot and shoe dealers, had a meeting of creditors to-day, when a committee was appointed to examine the books. Messrs Church Brothers, merchants, have stopped payment. The inquest on the female's remains found in Sussex street has* been farther adjourned. Mr Tait's horses engaged in the Melbourne races left by steamer to-day. At a meeting of the Anglican Church, the Bishop presiding, resolutions were carried to oppose the new Education Bill. In the Assembly, the Government stated that they do not intend moving in the* matter of the federation of the" Australian colonies. , The Treasurer's Budget is anxiously looked for. Rumors are current that the ' Government < intend proposing a new scheme of iaxation, or a national . bank oi issue. In the Assembly to-day, Mr Forster's motion was carried for the appointment of a select committee to consider and report' upon the expediency of altering the number of members of Parliament, and of correcting the anomalies and inconveniences of the present system of representation by construction of new electoral districts, or by the division of those at present existing. Mr Campbell, of Sussex street, reports ~ fiales of maize at 3s 8d per bushel to-day, for good shipping samples, of^which the market is very bare. The City of Melbourne, s.s., sailed for # Melbourne to-day, having on board The Barb, Volunteer, Falcon, and Warwick, being Mr Tait's^contribution towards the horses which_ are to run at the ensuing Melbourne Spring Meeting. " The weather last night wa3 splendid, and the eclipse attracted much observation. The P.N.Z. & A.R.M. Co.'s s.a. Kaikoura will make a trial trip to -morrow, after having received her overhaul, and prior to her departure for Panama' on the Ist of October. Tenders have been invited by Government for a vessel of not more than 300 tons, to proceed to the Northern Territory. The eclipse- of the moon last night was very distinctly seen, and the night was perfectly clear. A suspicious case of poisoning by strychnine has taken place at Clare. The valuators of runs have proceeded to the north, to value runs in that district.

At auction to-,day, greasy wool, from the Darling, .very inferior quality, all faults, realised 6£d to 7^d. Chilian flour, all faults, LS. The result of the polling of the citizens on the gas question was in favor of lighting the city. There have been no sales of wheat : nominal price, 5s ; flour vory dull at Ll3 to Ll4.
