The details of the new system of Stamp Duties, to which the House of Representatives has given its assent, will be found in another column. The arrangements are a close approximation to those which are in force in the home country. It is, not against the duties themselves, as a source of taxation, that objections lie, so much as against the proposal to levy additional taxation of any kind or in any shape. Why the colony should be further taxed at all, under its present circumstances, is the question. It must be admitted to be unwise to increase th§ permanent burdens of the people, and introduce innovations in the fiscal system, in order to meet a present which might be adequately provided for by a special arrangement, such as the "increased issue of Treasury Bills, as suggested by Mr Moorhouse. . We are, 'however, precluded from commenting" on the financial policy of the Government until it is before us a wholq^ We must withhold our remarks upon the scheme of Stamp Duties until wo are enabled to understand the relation it bears to the new tariff, which comes into operation this day, and the details of which were; obtained by us only at a late hour last night, having been transmitted to the Custom House authorities by electric telegraph from Wellington.
