COMMERC IAL INTELLIGENCE.

Wkst Coast Times Office, Friday Evening. The amount of import dut}' collected at the Custom House to-day was £169 15s Bd. B1 T TY~OX EXPOBT3. Gold , £901' 9 2 Representing 7212 ounces cleared by the Bank of !New- Zealand". /

■ Considerable activity in the import market has been apparent during the week, consequent upon the arrival of several of our regular traders, with generally assorted eargos, considerably adding to stocks. "We notice the imports are very generally distributed over the mercantile houses here.

These regular supplies cannot materially affect the maikei, but tend .to a conlinu- , ance of the healthy and satisfactory condition we have had to note for some time past. The simultaneous arrivals of some lines, previously scarce, has caused a downward tendency, in which may be indicated oats — a short tim!e ago scarce. The quantity to hand during the week hsis been, for our limited consumption, somewjaatheavy — say from 7000 toSOOO bushels. The cargo of the Prince Consort (476 bags) was offered r.t ship's side, a portion' only being allowed to go at 7s 6d per bu?hel—remainder withdrawn. For a very fine parcel, ex Falcon, offered on wharf yesterday, 6s 9d was refused. . Bulk beer consigned to 'store for better rates, ex same ship. Chaff Drought Ll9 per ton ; carrots, Ll4; turnips, L 8 ; potatos, L 6 per ton ; whole maize, 7s 9d per bushel. Flour has come forward more freely, but without affecting prices; Adelaide, L2l t0L.21 ] 6s; Chilian, Ll9 10s. Hams and bacon — Coey's have been placed at Is ' ocl per lb. EngHsh cheese, Is 5d and Is s£d for large and small. Butter, previously very scarce, has come in frtely, Is 7d being realised foi first to hand ; 2s 4d to 2s od is new wanted for prime parcels. Wines and spirits remain stationary ; imports limited. Also, bottled beer, which has met with little inquiry, as the' bulk of the due shipments are to hand, a steady and firm marJfet is anticipated for the ensuing.week.
