At a meeting of the Committee of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce held at the Exchange, on the 17th ins', Mr J. L. Montefiore iv the chair, to consider the subject of the Panama Mail Service, a .resolution was passed to the effect that, in the opinion of the Cham-, ber, unless Sydney bo made the terminus for the main boats of the Panama Lins of Steam Communication, the subsidy of this colony should be withdrawn. The attention of the committee was drawn to the rates of postage of letters ; those via Panama between Eisgland j and the colony being supposed to be double those via Sue/C to Southampton — the rates for newspapers being quadruple. It' was also pointed out that in England 'the principle upon which wjis based' increased rates for letters according to weight, differed from that of other nations ; any letter if exceeding 1 ounce being charged at the rate for 2 ounces, while by regulations in other countries it woultl be charged only as for 1£ ounces, if not exceeding that weight. The chairman and M? John Alger were appointed a deputation to wait upon the Pos! master G-cneral, and point out to him anomalies in the postal rates. Why is Queen Victoria just about now, like a deaf lady ?— Because her Erin (hearing) is in a bad condition.
