Business in the import markets has to-day shown a little more activity, a fair demand having been experienced, and there arc, moreover, signs of an improvement, which £hongh fluctuating of late, is expected to be of a more permanent nature Early in the forenoon the public tale of Mauritius sugars attracted attention ; there was a good attendance of the trade, and some 5300 bags were disposed of out vof 5600 offered^ at prices which establish an advance ,of 15s to 20s all round 0701' last sales. Privately, sales of good brewing crystals arc rcpoMcd at 34s to 36s* Breadstuff's x are in better request. Sales of first Adelaidc^town flour, in parcels to the extent of fifty tons, for transhipment, are mentioned at LlG»ss. Trade parcels of country brands have also been placed at Lls. Port MaeDonnell wheat is again beginning to be inquired for, though business is checked by the disinclination evinced to pay tho rates required, say, 7s. At auction, about 2400 I bushels damaged Chilian realised 5s 3d for slightly, and 4s l^d to 4s 6d for badly damaged. Oats are wanted for trade purposes, and prices are firm at 5s to 5s 3d. Barley remains as quoted, 4s to 4s 3d, without drawing much notice. In liquids we hear of the Carlisle Company's bulk ale being quitted at LG in bond. Tennent's bottled ale ha 3 likewise found buyers at 9s 6d. For Byass's stout ft 1 ere is an increasing demand, and parcels up to 500 cases have been quitted at prices rising to Sa 7£d. Further sales of Otard's pale brandy, in quarters, have been made at 6s 9d'; and sales of Otard's case and Hennessy's case brandies, to the oxtent of 1200 cases, are reported on private terms, but said to bo at 'rales sustaining quotations of 26s fof th» formev, wd, 97a fortU«*lattev. hear of about 500 boxes Ogloby's diaphauo candles having been dispose^ of at Hid. Malt is in considerable request, and looks as it' prices would go higher ; Os oifercl fur rather 1' large quantity, was refused 10-day. In provisions wo learn of' the salo of about 100 cases Sinclair's hams and bacon, on private terms. Tho market is being gradually clearod pf all tho cornsacks, for which, anything like 1 market rttt<es ia accepted. About ninety bales Calcutta sacks changed hands at about our quotation of this morning. Tcis still ,command notice. We are informed of about 100 cheßts'fine medium congou, las>t season's teas, , having been quitted at Is lOd. A parcel of 150 half-chests low common was quitted at Is 4d, and some fifty chests of ration teas have found buyers at Is 2d to Is 3d. Of new season's teas some 250 choscs have been sold, at prices v ranging from 2s to 2s 7d. In tobapcos l a parcel of ten half-tierces Southern twist has been placed at somewhat under 2s per lb. Some faulty lots of half-pounds, fie, were disposed of at auction.
