Yesterday morning, the p.s. Lioness sailed for Dunedin, aud many were the good wishes expressed that she might reach her destination iv safety. Since her removal from the North Spit, the utmost despatch V.ns been used to fit lijer for fea, and on Monday last, being declared ready, a final survey was held upon her, and the Lioness pronounced seaworthy. She then ran alongside th& coal hulk and took in fuel, and yesterday, with a fine S.W. breeze in her favor, left the river, intending to call'- at West Wanganui for a further supply of coal, and then make direct for her destination, via- Cook's Straits.
The schooner Dunedin cleared Otago Heads on the 9th instant, bound to this p^t. Strong , If. and 2T.E. winds kept her to the southward of Cape Campbell .until the 21st, when the breeze hauled to the S.E., and favored by this slant she ran through the Straits, rounding Cape Farewell the next day. Hence te tin? roadstead, which sbe reached at carlv morning on the 25th, easterly weather prevailed. The Dunedin crossed the bar in" tow of -tho Challenge the same clay. She brings a full general cargo. The schooner Prince Couso'rt left Port Chabners on tho 20th instant, with light S.W. winds and fine weather. Passed the Peninsula on the 21st s ; Capo Campbell the following day, and rounded Cape Farewell on the 22nd ; reached the roadstead at 2 a.m. on the 25tb ; and was towed into the river by the Challenge. She brings a full cargo of oat 9. The cutter Ellen arrived yesterday from Lytteltojj, after a remarkably smart run of two days and a-half. This handy little vessel left that port on the 22nd "instant, at S p m., with steady S.E. winds 'and fine weather, which curried hc ( r past Cape Farewell on tho '23rd, aud to the roadstead on the 25th, when the breeze hauling to the B.W. die crossed the bar under canvas, and reached the wharf at noou. Tho Ellen is laden with a cargo of produce. \ The p.s. Challenge returned from Greymouth yesterday, having been pretty' well employed during her absence. She left this port on Saturday last, and reached the Grey roadstead that night, where she remained until the next morning, and then towed inside the schooners Tambo, Jane Elkin and Emerald Isle in succession. On her return trip £o the roadstead she towed out the schoonera Christina Thompson and Breeze She remained at Greyniouth waiting for the Timbo to load up coal until Monday night, and then with her charge b'-hind her steamed for Hokitika, arriving 'as above. She afterwards conveyed Jthe schooner Dunedin and Prince Consort safely to the wharf. Captain Casey, who, it may be remembered, spent 33 days (28 without food) in the maintop of the water-logged ship Jano Lowden, has partly recovered from his sufferings, and
reached London; He writes a lotter expressive of his thanks to thoie who took a kind interest iv him. ixc says : — V lam at presont uunole' to proceed on my journey homo to Padstow, in Cornwall, where 'l have 'a wife and fivo thiUlivn, whom I have never scon since my wonderful preservation by the Almighty. The poor man saw sixteen of his shipmates .die while ho was so fearfully exposed. Tho " Home News" says that "a gentleman on Ecdear Sands picked up a bottle floating on the breakers, ' and on opening it found that it contained a piece of pnpev writ-, ten on both sides. The following- is a copy of the document : — '-Lost all hands on board, in the Geniiau Ocean. \ Whoever finds this, forward it to Mrs Shepai'd, No. 4, Frccleriekrow, Walworth, London. No hopes. The ship is sinking in >a storm. Can write no more. 'My heart is broken.' "
