COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

West Coast Times Office, Friday Evening. The amount of import duty collected at the Custom House to-day was £392 11s 5d The- following list of merchandise cleared shews its distribution :—: —

Nothing beyond a fair average amount of business can be noted for this week ; the weather on the Coast has not been propitious for for •' due " vessels reaching the wharf. Imports have consequently been light, and with the ,known fact, that peveral very useful shipments are close at hand, wholesale houses refrain from heavy purchases. Our present stock prices and population, taken in comparison with those of last spring, cannot fail to give an impetus to business, and continued confidence in the N West Coast. The sales, of town properties that have taken place recently are btrikingly indicative as to the belief in the future of Ilokitika.

In the value of wines and spirits tbere is not much " alteration, brandies remaining as last quoted ] the scarce articles are geneva and champagne, for which excellent prices could be realised. Beer in glass has been more inquired fof ; good brands of ale realise well ; porter also ,coming more into demand. Oilmen's stores have been neglected, and not placed at so good a figure as last quoted. -Provisions, say hams and bacon, shew a downward tendency. Candles are again easier, and although stocks arc light, Melbourne quotations hav"e made holders uneasy. We note last quotations from Sydney nre higher, also decidedly firmer in Victoria, which will tend to check the market here. Flour remaius as last quoted ; the tendency of the market is downwards, though no figures lower than our last have transpired. Stocks are low ; the margin between this and intercolonial ports being but small, no material alteration need be anticipated. Oats have given way, with very little apparent cause, no parcels of any importance having come forward to w arrant the decline ; 8s 6d to 8s 9d has been accepted for parcels. Bran continu> s low, 2s 9d having been accepted. Chaff has - been sold at Ll 8 per ton ; good lots are worth L2Q, Potatos remain at }<7 \q L 8 on 8 f f ciuolng itoelf *
