i , — — Communication by steamer was not effected with the roadstead yesterday, as the surf was far too heavy to be crossed by the river steamers, and in consequence the Lord Ashley^ which arrivod in the forenoon from Nelson, was not tendered on the evening's tide. The Yana got up t>teum with the intention of running out to her, but a final glauee at the boiling water on the bar induced Captain Jfieholl'to postpone her departure until this morning. Ihe P.X.Z. and A.R.M. Co.'s, s.s. Lord Ashley. Joir.es Fagley, commander, arrived in the roadstead from Nelson yes tor Jay morning. Mho was co'.nmunicuU*d with b;> signal onjy, (he surf being so heavy that an attempt to land passengers would havo been imprudent in the extreme. Of these, tho Lord Ashley lias 140 on board, co we presume she must, on her way down, have met the Rangitoto, and effected that transhipment which it was intended should have taken place at Kelson.
The s'.s. Thane Btrandct 1 on the Grey bar yesterday morning when attempting to put to sea heavily lad»n with coals for Syduey. This disagreeable intelligence was forwarded to the agents by telegram, aud later in the day another arrived, stating that the Thane was on the bar, within thirty yards of the north beach, and might be rescued on the evening's tide if tho services of a powerful tug beat were only available/ But in the face of such a sea that must have been running on the Grey bar last night, the Challenge declined to volunteer her services, so we much fear that the Thane's cargo must be sacrificed to save the vessel.
