The unsettled state of monetary matters fjr the greater part of the month, and the unnatural stringency exercised by the banks, have considerably influenced business, operations having in consequence been eurtai'el by the difficulty experienced in discounting paper, of any description ■whatever, and the value of all goods has declined. In bulk ales and stout little or no business has been dono, and if quotations are not lower it is not because importers would haze refused a concession to induce purchasers to come forward. Speculative attention has been directed towards cornsacks, and during the last fortnight somewhere about 300 bales must have changed hands Candles hare been sold largely, at a considerable decline. Cement, chemicals, chicory, coffee, confectionery, and cordage show little alteration. Fish, fruit, and blasting powder have decreased in value. The market for breadstuff's has fluctuated but little ; operations have tot been extensive. All feeding grains are lower. Hops and malt have improved somewhat. Kerosene oil has fallen fully Is per gallon. Prices of oilmen's stores by forced sales have been driven very low. Quicksilver has dropped 3d per lb. Provisions, rice, and salt have all been equally low of sale. Sugars have been dealt in to a fair extent. Timber has been operated in at declining rates. Tea, tobacco, and wineß and spirits have participated in the general depression.
