The war in Germany is entirely due to the proposal for Conference being giveti up through the mutual obstinacy ,of the conflicting powers!. i Count Bismarck opened the campaign on the anniversary of Waterloo day, and immediately seized Saxony, Hanover, and Hesse.
Italy then declared war against Austria.
The King Victor Emmanuel and his two sons, and Generals Garibaldi, Martdofa, and Cialdini, iirimedmtely went to the front and took the field; , .
The Austrian Emperor professed that the war had not been sought by him.
Should Prussia be successful, a great Protestant power in North Germany would be consolidated, absorbing half a dozen States.
A great battle took place on the 24th June, which lasted the entire day, and resulted in the Austrians being victorious. There was tremendous slaughter.
On the next day another bloody battie tdok place, when Corologgid Wd§ taken by the Austrians. Whilst these battles were raging in Venetia the campaign was opened in Germany, by the Prussians making descent on Altona, which was but meagrely garrisoned by the Austrian troops, who evacuated it. The next step was an advance upon the Hanoverian army by the Prussians. The King of Hanover, who commanded his troops, retired. He has sent all specie to England. The latter power has invaded Germany through Bohemia. During the struggle, England has remained perfectly neutral. The Russian Prince Gortschakoff has sent a circular to the Russian representatives abroad, stating that on the slightest violation of neutrality by France, Russia would abandon her present neutral attitude. India shareholders in Bombay City Bank and the Imperial Banking and Trading Company wound up voluntarily. The loss sustained by the Royal Bank, of India to June 3rd was L 350,000* The Bank is to be continued.
