GREY RIVER.

High Wateb This 8ay.— 1.50 a.m. ; 2.15 p.m. » Yesterday, the Challenge, p.s., returned from Greymouth, where she worked the bar with much, profit to herself on Wednesday. On her arrival in that roadstead she found five vessels afc anchor, waiting to be towed inBide. They were the schooners Mary Stewart, from Melbourne ; Littje Fre3, from Kaipara ; Three Brothel's, ' ftom Lyttelton ; Nancy, from Lytteltou ; and Tiger, from Bruce Baj\ These the Challenge conveyed inside, and then towed to sea the schooners Wild Wave and Star of Tasmania — both of which were bound to Christchurch. In yesterday's shipping list we omitted to chronicle the departure of the Emma Ja:ie,and John v Mitchell, for Gr.eymcmth, and Cymraes, for Dunedin. We have noticed them in to-day's. Mr White, agent for the P.N.Z. Company, received a telegram yesterday morning from the Bluff, to the, effect that the s.s. Tararuii had just arrived from Melbourne, which port she left on the 10th inst. " She brings no ivMligeuce of the English mail. The s.s. Keera true to her time, arrived off tho port, en route to Duuedin, yeiterday afternoon, from Groy mouth,. She ,to»i I«4mi by tb# p-8- ,Uwm, wkieMwk out

to her thirty passengers, tho greatest part of whom have taken tickets for Bluff Harbor. When the transhipment was offectcd, tho Keora proceeded on hor voyage, southwards. After two days' detention in the roadstead^ the Mary brigantine, from 'Molbourne, was" towed inside fty tho Challenge yesterday morning. Sho cleared Port Phillip July 30, nnd whilst in the Straits uxpci/iunuud light N.E. winds and line weather. She took her final departure from Deal Island on the 2nd, when the wind shifted into the N.W., freshened up, and raised a nasty sea. In a sudden squall she snapped her jibbooin off close to the cap, and made tho remainder of the passago under a jury spar. Tho New Zealand coast, about Okarita, was sighted on tlie 9th mat., but being caught by a strong southerly set she found herself next morning twenty miles below Jackson's Bay, and ' through a prevalence of light variable winds, combined with the set, was unable to reach tho roadstead until 5 p.m. on the 14th, when she authored. Tlie absence of the tug Challenge at Groymouth detained her outside until yesterday, when sho arrived at the wharf as above. The Mury brings a full general cargo, much of it being dead »•> ight, and she is in censpqueuce very low in the water, Six passengers landed from her. The barque Dreadnought, Captain- Smith, from London, arrived here on Tuesday night, the 7th iustant,^ after a protracted passage pf 160 days. She left Gravesend on the 21st March ; landed the pilot tho next clay at the Downs ; passed tho Lisurd on the 3rd ofApril ; and sighted the Island of Sf . Paul on June 30 ; was abreast of Tasmania on July 15 ; sighted Cape Fargwell onlhe sth instant, and arrived at Nelson as above. During the f>as age the Dreadnought met with a succession of very heuvy gales, which accounts for her long passage. She brings a full cargo for port and Taranaki, ana hits also steerage" passengers — Mr Grey and. Mr Morflat. — " Nelson Examiner," August 9. — [The Dreadnought is one of those vessels whoso protracted arrival raised such serious doubts of their safety. We are glad to hear that she is at last iv port.]
