CHRISTCHURCH.

The " Lyttelton Times" of Saturday last reports: — Although transactions in our import market continue to be characterised by extreme caution on the part of dealers, a somewhat more cheerful tone has been perceptible during the past week. The Talbot, whose arrival .we referred to ' last week, has not yet • commenced her discharge, and in the meantime stocks of several articles of general consumption aro getting low. Candles, for instance, for immediate delivery are firm, and aro disposed of at Is s£d to Is 6d ; although a decline in our quotations may be looked for when shipments on board this vessel come into consumption. The same remark may applj to most descriptions of dried fruits. Salad oils (half pints) find ready buyers at paying rates. The market is quite bare of Lea and Perrins' Worcester sauce. Sardines halves and quarters are wanted. Teas continue scarce, and a considerable advance may be anticipated by holders influenced by advices from the Australian markets. Supplies of counter and light Mauritius sugars are getting decidedly low. Good rum, as well as Scotch whisky are inquired for. Brandies, on the other hand, both in case and in bulk, arc in full stocks. Messrs J. Ollivier and Son held a large clearing sale of general merchandise at the stores of Mr J. D. Macpherson, in Cashel street, on Tuesday aud Wednesday last. The attendanco was good, and bidding for some articles brisk, whilst for others a considerable sacrifice must have been submitted to. We quote prices realised for a few articles :— Ale in bot2,%^- ?U!?
