Be&ide- tliis quantity, there are 10.000 ounces at thy Grey ready for exportation by the sarao steamer. In the Resident Magistrate's Court, yesterday, Stephen Roberts was committed to take his trial for burglariously entering tho house of Mary Anne Robertson, ou Gibson's Quay. This is the first committal for the next sessions of the Supreme Court, and should, quarterly ses3ions not bo accorded to Westlandj the prisoner wi'l remain in gaol five months ere his case is duposo:l of. We liavo often protested against tho monstrous injustice of half-yearly sessions, and hope that for tho future the gaol delivery in Westland will take place every three months.
We are happy to state that tho rumor which reached town on Sunday, that three horscmcu were drowned whilst attempting to cross the Teremakau, was entirely unfounded as yesterday inoming a telegram was received from Greymouth by Mr Alcorn, from his brother, containing the satisfactory intelligence that he had arrived there " all safe" with the gentlemen (oao of them Mr Glynn) who left Hokitika in his company. At the same timc } how they crossed the Tevemakau remains a mystery, a3 the telegram is silent on that point. If they swam their horses across (us related by tho party who reported the occurrence to the Police) we cau only say that, their escape was miraculous, and that they were most rnsli in making the attempt.
We have great pleasure in stating that Mr John Ellias Dodd, a gentleman who has beeii connected wilh the staff of the West Coast TlJir.3 during the recent sittings of the Courtj was yesterday admitted by his Honor Mr 'Justice Gresson as a barrister and solicitor of tho Supremo Court of the colony of N,ew Zealand. His Honor took the opportunity of congratulating Mr Dodd upon the success with which he had passed his examination.
The criminal calonctar foi 1 the week ending Saturday, August 11, is light, as only 3 males and 1 female were sentenced by his Worship : 3 lun-itici \wro ronwi led for medical dxa-mi-n.ition. From tho report of Sergeant M'Myn, who is in charge of tlie old gaoi, we see that 0 mali. 3 aud 1 female were discharged during the week, and that on Saturday 'last there remained in custody 21 males and 3 females, classified as follows : — hml labor gang, 8 males and 3 fomales ; imprisonment only, 3i males 5 lunatics, 3 males ; on remand, .7 males. The Westlaud district gaol returns for the week ending Saturday, August 11, have been handed to us by Mr D.ile, the gaoler, and arc as follow : — Under sentence from the Supreme Court with hard labor, 27 ; imprisonment only, 1 ; debtors, 5 ; total, 33. There was no accession to the number of confinees during the week, and no discharges made out. Tho mail for England closes this morning, and wo understand that it will be uuu3ually heavy, a very large number of newspapers h.-iving been posted in tho courso of Saturday and yesterday. We regret that tho Wallaby brought no Nelson papers, and that the Grothenburg files have not come to hand, neither of the river steamers having had communication with her during yesterday. In connection with tho District Hospital we hear that it is intended to erect a Lunatic Asylum, aud that the plans of the building are already drawn, and tenders for tho work will bo called shortly. Tho building will contain twelve cells — some of which will be padded, wherein, to confind tho most violent cases, tho cvuelly and pernicious effects of binding, and strait waistcoats being fully recognised. From compiled statistics taken for the quarter ending Juno 30th, 1866, and published in the Provincial Grovernment "Q-azette'' of the 2nd instant, wo see that of eighteen sheep stations visited by tho Scab Comnfissioners, only five were declared clean. Amongst the remainder, 157,148 diseased sheep were distributed, and tho aggregate amount of fines inflicted upon station-holders according to the Act was L 4654. The number of sheep depastured on those stations pronounced clean amounted to 35,500. The piece of quartz mentioned by the " Grey Argus," as having been found at Maori Gully, has proved, on being broken up, to be impregnated with gold to an extent seldom seen. "We have inspected a portion of it, and certainly we cannot remember having seen anything equal to it, the gold studding (ho itono in awiu iw\w"
