GREY RIVER. High Wateb This Day.— 3.25 a.m.; 3.50 p.M. ♦ ■ (BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) [pbom: orß own cobkespondent.] CIIBISTCHCBCn, Thursday, 4.12 p.m. Arrived yesterday, the ship Talbot, from London, 110 days out. All well on board. Sailed, on Tuesday last, the Sea Shell, for Hokitika. _«. Tho achoon.-r Emma Jane, which left Okarita on Wednesday, reports the bar of that . river in a good condition. She wa9 towed to sea by the Woodpecker, p. 8., and arrived here yesterday morning. In anticipation of receiving a freight of gold-dust from Okarita by the steamer Lyttel- j ton, which was expocted last night, the s.s. j Auckland delayed her departure for twentyfour hours, and will Bail for Sydney this morning, at 11 o'clock. ! Tho schooner Fulcon, and ketch John Mitchell, left Greymouth on Wednesday tuornkig, and arrived off Hokitika the same day. The Falcon reports the Grey bar in a rery bad state, as there was a heavy sea breaking upon it, and the depth of water was inconsiderable. She took the ground when crossing, an hour before high water. Botwoeu 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. yesterday morning, both schooners were towed in to this poit by tho steamer Persevere. There was a little more stir at tho wharf yesterday thau we have noticed for some days, which was occasioned by the arrival of the William Miskin, from Dunedin, and a, few small craft from Okarita and Greymouth, and the departure of the Kennedy, s.s., and Spray the OHe for Nelson, via Greymouth, the other for Lyttelton. The former was soon out of sight ; but at sundown last evening, the Spray wa* still clearly distinguishable, having boon becalmed in the roadstead all day. The paddle steamers Challenge and Persevere did a little business in tho towing line, which thoy doubtles* found acceptable tftw $$ ft» c| .' flnt-wwa tot

biftughf in the Emma *Tane, and . 'JPanifcp, ' schooners, and towed out th-O £VYiy ; whilst tho PerseTero i (.letcrujpcc'. i'l loin timo, got up steam, a>& *e'ic -tjio river al 1 a.m. yesterday uy 3 n.ra. had brought; tho Falcon safely to tho wharf, and the John Miteholl an hour later. This working the bur at night speaks very favorably of tho condition of tho entrance, which indeed is excellent, as tho channel runs out nearly straight, with over twelve feet of water at high tide. Tho Lioness was not so fortunate as her rivals, although she ran outside she did not succeed in securing a ' tow.' She, however, did good service in supplying the s.s. Wm. Miskin with sufficient; coal to bring her to tho wharf, that vessel having run clean out of firing matter. The s.s. William Miakin left Dunedin at midnight on tho 28th instant, with fresh N.E. bveeics and five weather, and at 4> p.m. the day following, arrived at Blull 1 Harbor. Two hours afterwards she again left, but when fairly in the Straits was met by a strong S. W. gale, which, by the lime she fetched the West Cape, had so much increased as to 'compel her to run back to Cod Island for shelter, where she anchored curly oh ' the 30th. Eemaincd there all that day, and at 8 p.m., the -gale having abated, she got underweigh, and hence to this port light S.K. bronzes prevailed. Through her delay in the Si raits, the William Miskin ran short of coals, and was obliged to break up fittings, and use everything burnable that could be spared, for fuel. Therd wns only a sufficiency to bring her to the roadstead, and a few bags of coal had to , be borrowed from tUe Lioness (which fortunately ran alongside yesterday morning) to lake her to the wharf. The Miskin brings a full general cargo, and twenty-seven passengers. Just at sundown last night a stoamev's smoke was seen far to the southward. Darkness closed in before it was possible to make her out, but at the smoke when first seen was well to seaward, We think it probable the Gothenburg ha 9 again returned. It is, however, just possible the veoael may prove to b'> the Lytteltou, as &he 'Wa3 due last night from Oknrita. The s.s. Star of the Evening left Dunedin for Hokitika, via Cook's Straits, at 6 p.m. lust Saturday. She may, therefore", be hourly expected. The preliminary surveys and borings for tho new graving dock at Port Chalmers, were brought to a satisfactory conclusion yesterday, and it is understood that a suitable site has been fq^ind to the left of the Jetty, closo in-shore, underneath the present quarry. It is expected that estimates of the work will shortly be laid before the Dock Board, when, no doubt, operations will be at once commenced. — " Otago Daily Times," July 25th. Rewaivd fok Saving Life at Sjja. — The Albert^ Medal, designed by Mr Jenimott Browne, of the Board of Trade, aud intended as a reward to be conferred on those who have distinguished themselves in saving life at sea, consists of a monogram, containg tho letters " V.A." in gold, interlaced, and resting upon a ground of blue enamel, the whole surrounded by a garter, on which are inscribed tho word 9in bold relief, " For Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea." and surmounted ' by a representation of the crown of his Royal Highness the late' Prince Consort. The decoration, which, as our readers are aware, ha 3 been adopted [by royal warrant, will only bo conferred on those persons who, in saving or attempting to save the life of othors from shipwreck or other perils of the sea, have endangered their own. It is tho intention that this distinction shall bo substantial, asjwell as honorable, to the recipient. It is of the valuo of about six pounds ; and successive acts of gallantry performed after it has been conferred will be recorded by the addition of bars to be attached to the ribband by which the medal is suspended, and which, we may add, is dark blue, traversed by two longitudinal white stripev We have no doubt that this beautiful decoration, combining as it will the recognition of gallant behaviour with a mark of the royal &ivor, will supply au additional stimulus to the effort of those brave fellows who risk their lives to rescue their fellow creatures from appallirfg perils, and who have hitherto remained without' the mai-k of distinction to which they are bo fairly entitled.— " Southern Cross." The b.s. Keern, D. Joyce, commander, wiih the English mails on board from Panama bj the P.K.Z. and A.E.M. Company's steamship Eakaia, arrived from Wellington j-esterday evening. She left Hokitika, on the 19th, Grey Eivcr on the 20lh, made a fine run to Cape Farewell, but was obliged to anchor under the Cape for 48 hours, in consequence of a heavy gale from the S.E. On rounding the spit signals of distress flying from the shore ; bove up and lowered the lifeboat, in charge of Mr Leys, chief officer, to render assistance, but found it quite impossible to land through the heavy sea. Js T ight coming on, and finding nil attempts to land useless, Mr Leys and boat's crew returned to the vessel. The Kcera then proceeded on to "Wellington to land the passengers and supplementary mails for the Raahine, only having a few hours to spare. Immediately on arrival, Captain Joyce informed the Government of the case, and assistance was sent to the shipwrecked people. At Wellington, tho Panama portion of the English inward mail was received on board, and she started at 3 p.m. on the 25th j arrived at Lyt- ; telton at 11.30 a.m. following day ; left Lyttelton at 3 p.m. same day, and arrived as abovo. " Otago Daily Times," Juuo 2vßth.2 v Bth. The schooner Dispatch arrived yesterday forenoon from Hokitika, having made a smart trip, sixteen days having only been occupied in the passage to. aud fro, including discharging and ballasting. She left Port Chalmers on the 11th inst. ; arrived at Hokitika wharf on the 18th, discharged 150 tons of cargo, ballasted, and .left on Saturday evening, the 21st; had light northerly winds to the West Cupe, which she passed at midnight on Thursday ; from thence fresh westerly breezes were experienced to arrival. She proceeds to town, and will be again laid on for the West Coast. —Ibid.

The s.s. Koera will be again despatched for the West Coast, -with passengers and cargo, about the iniddio of next week. — Ibid.
