The P.N.Z. & A.R.M. Co.'s s.s. Otago, T. Bandall, commander, cleared Sydney heafls at 1 p.m. on "the 20th inst. During the first three days the wind was very unsteady, veering from-S.W. to S.E., with frequent squalls, accompanied with a heavy S.E. swell. On the evening of the 24th, cased the engines, and at 8.30 the next morning enmo-to oif Hokitika. The Otago brings tweuty-threo passengers for Hokitika, aud seventeen for Qrcymonth. She sails for Nelson, touching at tho Grey, this morning, at 8 o'clock. The s.s. Kennedy left Nebon on tho 20th inst. at 1 p.m., and arrived at Greymouth at 4 p.m. the next day. Discharged cargo on the 23rd, and left for this port at 6 p.m., brmging-up off the bar at 8 p.m. Next morniug'B tide, she ran into the river, and reached the wharf safely. Throughout the passage fine weather prevailed. The Kennedy brought Bixty tons of cargo, which she discharged in good ordei*, and left again for Nelson, via G-reymouth, tho evening of the day oa which she arrived. (Through an omission, the forogoing paragraph waa not entered in yesterday's issue.
The " Sydney Empire" of the 16th states that the schooner Princess Alexandra, from Hokitika, arrived on the preceding day. She encountered tho full force of the late heavy gales, aud during the last fifty hour* of her passage ran a distance of 500 miles. A rather hazardous experiment was tried yesterday by Captain Randall, of Hio Otago, which, although resulting successfully, was not unattended with risk, aud wo hope will not be again repeated on any future occasion. Induced by the fineness of the weather and an exceedingly light surf, Captain Randall manned oue of hi 3 boats, and, accompanied by the purser and several passengers, in ide for the shore, frith an evident intention of landing on tho beach. "When this was perceived from the shore, a considerable crowd assemble J, and watched with great interest the progress of the tiny craft, which reached the shore safely, although its occupants received a gratuitous ahowor-bath ere they landed. After remaining on shore for about an hour, they prepared to return, the surf in the meantime having slightly increased, but by watching their chance between the seas, tho surf was crossed without accident. A marked change for the better has taken place i.i the approaches to the port during the past cwo days, and now, instead of three, there is but one legitimate channel for tho egress and* ingress of vessel*. The banks which formed last week, and rendered tho chaiiadl intricate, havo once more undergone a changj, the sea having hove home the middle patch of saml upon the north spit, completely closing the north channel ; wlnls' the gut runjiing out to the south has quite fillod up by a similai" Bhiftiug of the southern bank. This has effectually cleared tho middle or west channel, by sending the whole of tho river water through it ; and afc present there is quite eleven feet of water at high tide ; arid the passago has considerably widened also. We are glad that this alteration has occurred, for several heavy bottoms are expected inwards, and their delay outside, through tin impassable bar, would be a matter of serious inconvenience and regret. Tho s.s. Thane left the river last night, at 8 o'clock. Due preparations were made to ensure her safe departure by lighting up the beacons, and in case of mishap, the harbormaster's crew were in attendance. Captain Turnbull took her across the bar, aud when she reached tho roadstead he was transferred to the Otago for the night, as a return to the shore until this morning was impossible. The Thane proceeds to the Grey and Buller, and will, we believe, call in to West Wanganui for a load of cattle.
