VICTORIA.
We take the following from the " Age." of the 17th instant :—
A very fair amount of business has been doing- to-day, in small quantities for trade requirements, but only in a few articles have the transactions been of a character to influence the market. In two of the most important staples — tea and svgar — the demand has been exceedingly languid ; of the former we only hear of 50 chests oongou having changed hands at Is 9d in bond ; and a small parcel of dark yellow crystal 3ugar sold at L3B, in bond. The trade desire to buy sugars at a lower price than has ruled of late, hence the paucity of sales. The Eva Joshua arrived to-day from Mauritius, with 6000 bags. Geneva has again been operated in to some extent ; about 7000 cases changed hands to-day, at 13s for V.H., and JDKZ a price with a margin on 14s. A shipment of white herrings, in half-barrels, ex White, Rose, has' been sold for transhipment at a price equal to 355, duty paid. There have been some speculative purchases in linseed oil, 900 drums and 60 casks having changed hands at os to 5s l£d for the former, and 4s 7£d to 4s lOd for the latter ; and holders now demand 53 and 5s 6d for drums and casks. Hoop iron has rqet with some .speculative inquiry, and about 60 tons, part sold on Saturday and part to-day, have been disposed of at Ll4 for | and I inch light guage, an&L23 for large ; this is aa advance on Jafe rates,
caus d t>y tlie liglit shipme >ts of this description of iron atlvi-od by tho mail. About 10 tons galvanised iron consisting of 24, 26, and 28 guages, have been placed at L3l per ton. Bass's ale continues to move off" 'in trade parcels at L 7 12s 6d ; for larger parcels no dcibt a lower figure would be accepted. A sin ill lot of figs has found a buyer at 7jjd, a slight reduction on Lie rate>. Gutter and cheese appear to maintain their his»h prices ; the former is worth, for good Tusinauian potted, 2s Id, at which rate it has been sold within the last few d>ys; and, to-day, a shipment of Cheddur cheese has brought Is sd. These are only slight reductions mi the extreme prices ruling six weeks ago. Brea-lstuffs are very dull ; some dealers call the price of Adelaide LIG 15s to Ll7 ss; others, Ll6 10s to Ll7. The only transaction coining under our noticcis the sale of 50 tons Chilian, at Ll4 Millers are very indisposed. to purchase wheat at existing price?, and we hear of no transactions privately. 2300 bushels d imaged Californian, ex Pembrokeshire, sold at auction, to-day, nt from 3s lid to 6s Id net cash. Barley is quiet ; oats are firm ; sales, in small lots only, have been made at 5s 6d to 5s 9d, according to quality. For maize, holders demand more money to-day, paitly'owing to the flooded state of the rivers in New South Wales, and partly that the prices aie higher in Sydney ; we quote 5s 4d to 5s 6J. A large parcel of Patna rice, 550 tons, changed hands, to-day, but the price is not disclosed. Mr £>. Rannard, boot and shoe importer, has called a meeting of his creditors ; wo understand he is not in a position, juot yet, to state what his liabilities are. *
