THE LATE MESSRS. WHITCOMBE AND TOWNSEND.

(to tub editob or the west coast times.) Sir, — My attention has been called to a pragmph iv the " Lyttellon Times" of tho 16th inst., purporting to^ be an extract from your issue of the 11th instant, and stating that " Whitcombe and Townsoud were surveyors under Dr Haast, on his West Coast explorations, and that they died of starvation,' &c. This is an entirely wrong statement, as Mr Whitcombe held tho appointment of Eoad Surveyor, and was not connected -with Dr Haast, and his death occurred long before that gentleman travelled on the West Coaßt — by drowning, when crossing the Tereinakau. Mr Townsend was not connected with tho survey at all — and was drowned also. I am, Sir, yours truly, Jno. S. BaowNiNa.

July 19th.
