THE TRIAL OF THE MURDERERS.

Tromthe "Nelson Examiner," July 19.)

We are glad to find, for many reasons, that the Government has abandoned the idea of removing the Maungatapu, murderers N from Nelson to Wellington for trial. This removal was at one time fully intended, and would have been carried out, but for the opposition it met ■ with from the Nelson members in Wellington, aud from the Government of this province. We learn that as soon as the intention of removing the murderers became known to our members, they waited upon Mr Stafford, and stated grave objections to the proceeding. The Premier did not at once yield to their •wishes ; but a communication which he subsequently received from the Superintendent — pointing o*it the enormous expense that would attend the removal of the prisoners aud fifty witnesses, and the serious inconvenience to which many of the witnesses would be put by a forced absence from their business for probably a fortnight — prevented Mr Stafford from proceeding with his original intention. The arrival of the Provincial Solicitor, in Wellington, on Sunday last, settled the business, and we now learn that the men are to be tried here, and that a special session will probably be held for the purpose early in September. It is the intention of the Government, we find, to send over from Wellington a gentleman to assist Mr Adams in conducting the prosecution.
