Sailed— July 1 9th, the Thane, for the West Coast ; July 20 Lb, the Kennedy, for the Grey and Hokitika ; the Lord Ashley, for the West Coast. The Maungatapu murderers were brought up for examination to-day. The circumstantial evidence against them is very strong. The independent testimony of Sullivan has not yet been given. On a former occasion Jervis swore that the prisoners had bought articles at bis store at Canvas Town, which he wrapjjpd up in a copy of the "Marlborough Press," he believed of the 20 th June. The evidence to-day showed that the loaded gun found near the dead horse was wrapped with a portion of the paper of that date, and that other portions of the same paper of same date 'were found wrapped round pepper taken by the prisoners from Canvas Town. Another piece was found in the body of the murdered man Mathieu. All these pieces fit perfectly together, and are shewn to be parts of the same paper. The prisoner Sullivan was proved by a clerk in the New Zealand Bank to have sold gold on the 14th June. All the prisoners were remanded until Thursday the 26th. Another fire took place in Auckland on the 1 7th inst. A house was burnt down in Durham-street, supposed to be the work of an incendiary.
