LOSS OF THE CALYPSO ON STEWART'S ISLAND.

Mr Fisher, own»r of the Jjrig Calypso, who arrived as passenger in the Alhambra from the Bluff yesterday,, has furnished U3 with the particulars relative to the loss of that vessel on Stewart's .Island. The Calypso was bound from Newcastle to this port, with a cargo of coal. On approaching Foveaux Straits she encountered very severe weather, during which a tremendous sea struck tho vessel, carrying away bulwarks, boat, and galley, besides doing other damage. In order to repair damages she made for Stewart's Island, and brought up under a point about fourteen miles from Port William, in seven fathoms water ; repaired damages, got underweigh, and stood off about 200 yards, when she struck heavily aft on a re^f not laid down on the chart ; carried away her rudder, started sternpost, rudder trunk, and wooden ends. Shortly afterwards, through the licle rising, she slipped off the reef, when it was found she was making a deal of water. Hands were kept continually at the pumps, and the vessel was navigated with her canvas. She fetched the south-east side of the island, when the water was gaining fast, so much so that the sea was level wMi her water ways amidships. Being kept close in shore, for the purpose of saving life, sho touched the ground, and almost immediately became a wreck. While on shore, one of tho crosstrees carried away, and foil clown on deck, striking one of the crew on the head, and fracturing his skull. Her sails were unbent, and all that could be saved was done. The master left the mate and one hand on the beach, in-charge of the wreck, to save and protect ; and proceeded to Invercargill, with the remainder of his crow, including the in- - jured man, for medical assistance, where he arrived last week. Dr Mc^ckton performed

an operation on the skull, which restored the patient to consciousness. The master telegraphed the loss of his vessel to Mr Fisher, who proceeded to the Bluff. The vessel is insured for LIOOO in the Otago Company, her cargo being insured for invoice prices at Newcastle. — " Otago Daily Times," June 13.
