At a late hour on tide yesterday morning, he s.s. Albion hove in sight to the southward, nd steamed into the l'oadstead just too late 0 secure the services of the Yarra, -which had ►eon attending upon the Airedale. This deays her fully 2-i hours ; as working the bar Ist night's tide was out of the question, and ,is the more vexatious, inasmuch as there is very appearance of a freshet down, which will q aU probability rc-ider the bar impassable. Die Airedale woitfd have sailed last night fluid the passengers have been sent out to ier, btrt the tide serving so late prevented his. The Albion signalled that she had 80 passengers and five tons of cargo for Hokitika. 1 The P.N.Z. & A.R.M. Co.'s s.s. Airedale, W. H. Meikleham, commander, left Manukau June 25, New Plymouth on the 26th, Nelson the 28th, Picton the 29th, Wellington the 30th, Lyttelton July 2ud, and Dunedin at 4 p.m. July sth, arriving at the Bluff the next morning, and left the same day at 1.15 p.m. During the afternoon, light easterly winds and fine weather prevailed, but at 10 • p.m., when off the West Cape, it came on to blow suddenly and with great violence from the N.N.W. Tliis 'soon rose a very high sea, and as the gale increased the steamer was compelled to heave-to under storm staysail and trysail. For thirty-four hours she remained by the wind until 8 a.m. on the Bth, when the gale having moderated, the Airedale was kept away, and under a full head of steam steered for Hokitika. On the evening of the 9th, being well up with the port, and the weather coming in aocorclingly thick and hazy, the engines were slowed for the night, and at daylight next morning the town was sighted, and the anchor let go in ten fathoms water. The Airedale brings 46 passengers for Hokitika and Greymouth, and about 25 tons of cargo.
