Messrs Dobson and Todhunter left for Christchurch, yesterday morning, by Cobb's coach. Messrs Shearman (Polico Commissioner) and Bird also departed by the same conveyance.
Determined, if possible, to prevent any delay to passengers on the road between this town and Greymouth, Messrs Oobb and Co. have put on an extra coach between the Arahaura and the Teromakau, so that when the former river is flooded passengers cau be boated, the horses swam across, and at once transferred to the spare coach. In fine weather such a proceeding will ba unnecessary, as the river* can then be forded, but when it is up, this arrangement will prove a very great convenience and saving of time to travellers. We are glad to see that tho same energy, enterprise, and shrewdness for which Cobb and Co. are so famod in other parts of tho colonies, is displayed by the Westland branch, and we trust that a plentiful harvest will reward tho good seeds they have sown here.
According to the desire of Mr Dobson, his son was buried in the Greymouth cemetery, between the graves of Messrs Whitcombe and Townsand, two surveyors who accompanied Dr Ilaast on his first expedition to the West Coast, and died through starvation and exposure. A more appropriate resting-place could not be found' for the remains of one who, like these two unfortunate- gentlemen, lost his lifo in the public sorvice. We understand the Government meditates erecting two monuments to the memory of these three men ; one over their graves in the ceme" tery, and tho other in Christchurch.
James Wilson alias James Murray, charged with the murder of Mr George Dobson, was brought up at the Greymoufch Police Court on Saturday last, and on tho application of Inspector James, remanded to Hokitika, to be brought up before the Eesident Magistrate on Monday, tho 15th inst.
The list of persons under committal for trial, which we published on Monday last, was supplied to us from the Police department. We understand that the inclusion in it of the name of Mr Dupre of Greymouth, as committed to take Ins trial for felony was unjustified, the charge against him which was connected with the goM smelting robbery, having been dismissed i>y tho Magistrate.
Mr Barton and Mr Harvey, of the Dunedin bar, have arrived by the Airedale. Mr Harvey's firm has been for some time established here under the style of Macgregor and Harvey. Mr Barton, -we believe, visits Hokitika primarily for the purpose of looking after the interests of his clients in tho case arising out of the Samson and Bruce affair, -which will be in the recollection of all our readers. It is probable that the learned gentleman will remain for some time amongst us.
Last evening Mr Bur ford took his benefit and played the Duke of Gloster, in Colley Cibbeis adaptation of "KichaM. the III." The house was fairly attended. In our next issue we shall give a more lengthened notice of the performance. To-night " Paul Pry " will be performed, followed by " Jonathan Bradford." The new drop scene painted- by Mr Smitit, representing the Temple of Olympus, was exhibited' for the first time last evening. The present week is the last of the season. On Friday the principal merchants and tradesmen of Hokitika give Mr Bartletfc a benefit and testimonial; the tickets for the dress circle, on this occasion, will be seven shillings and sixpence, and the stalls, five shillings. The price of the pit will not be altei'ed. We understand that the private boxes, and a large number of tickets are already taken.
