Wo are happy to say that its properties have at last been thoroughly tested, and by being put to a praotioal account its value has been established. A short tune ago a Mr Edward Berry, believing that these ranges were composed of a good limestone* ereoted a kiln on the Oobdon side, about half a mile up tho river, and commenced to test the stone. To do so it took him six or seven days of continuous work, but his labor was rewarded by tho result— that the stone proved to be ono of the finest limestones yet disco* verod. Tho stone requires great heat to reduce it, but when used it is found to set like a rook. Mr Berry at onoe commenced operations to reap the fruits of his discovery, and sent samples of^he lime to all tho principal towna in the colony, whish have already resulted hi ordors for Jargo quantities being rocoivod\ Up« wards of 100 bushels were sent in one lot to Hokitika, and already 1 moro is demanded. Thus oncouraged, Mr Berry iatends to remdvq his kiln down tho river, either to Qreymouth or Cobdon, ana commence operations on s large scale. Ho has also tested tho clay in the immodiate vioinity of tho town, and mado from, it a very good quality of briok for building purposes} and, as he intends to add bri,a> making to his business, wo trust in a short tune to soo a briokfleld in full operation within, ftßhortdistftncoofthetown.'? •" ' " "
