Reovos, Barff, and Cassius, and to thank you for the expression of confidence it implies in my desire to promote tho interests of Wostland by any personal services I can render it, Tho course adopted in this instanco by the gentlemen signing the requisition is an unusual one. From tho explanations offered mo, however, I understand it to bo their wish that Mr Reovos and myself should become candidates for tho town ot Hokitika, and that Mr. Cassius should bo associated with Mr. Barff in tho representation of the goldfields. I have ascertained from personal communication with these gentlemen that this is tho arrangement assented to by them — an arrangement that may secure to each of tho two electorates ono representative •in tho, Provincial Council chosen from amongst tho mercantile men of tho district.
On this understanding, I hayo much pleasure in complying with your request, and placing my services at the disposal of the doctors of Hokitika should thoy bo disposed to endorso tho judgment you havo been pleased to place upon thoir value. As it is upon thoir support I dopend for oloction, I will take a vory oarly opportunity of explaining to thorn my political viows.
