Tho following letter was received by the proprietors of the "West Coast Times," on Saturday : — Chambors, Gibson's Quay, Hokifcika, Jun0' 16, 1866. .
Gentlemen, — I am to intimate to you that iv your impression of this dato, styled " Summary for Europe," you havo made certain falso, calumnious, aud slanderous remarks, regarding " a certain Public Notary and Barrister." Theso remarks are utterly false and groundless. I nover uppoarod "in tho Wardon's Court dressed in bluo shirt and moleskins — in tho stylo of a new chum diggor." I am tho' only Notary Publio duly admitted and sworn, and residing in the district of Westland, and Colony of Now Zealand, I hold Hor Majesty's Commission, and am a Barrister and Solicitor, also, duly admitted and sworn.
I am to intimate to you further, that I claim to receive from you tho sum of five hundred pounds storling (L 600), in oonso* quonco of said statements. Unless I hear from you, and thdt bofore three o'clock p.m. to* day, I Bhall forthwith instruct my Attorney, James Henry O'Loughlin, Esq., to raise, inBtituto, and follow forth, legal proceedings in tho Supremo Court of this colony you. Barrister, Solicitor, and Notary Public, To tho Proprietors of tho " West Coast Times," Pro William Shaw, Weld-stroot, Ilokitika, Canterbury, JT. Z. The statement alluded to was furnished by our reporter, who had the facts as stated from Mr Johnstone's own mouth. We give him the benefit of this explanation, as of course tho letter wo publish has not been otherwise replied to.
