I />|ENTLBMEN,--I have to acknow. or ledge your requisition addressed to me jointly with Messrs. Reeves, Barff, and Cttssius, and to thank you for the expression of confidence it implies in my desire to promote tho interests of Weßtland by any personal services I can render it. The course adopted in this instanco by the gentlemen signing the requisition is an unusual one. From the explanations offered me, however, I understand it to bo their wish that Mr Reeves and myself should become candidates for the town ot Hokitika, and that Mr. Cassius should be associated with Mr. Barff in the representation of the goldfields. I have ascertained from personal communication with these gentlemen that this is the arrangement assented to by them — an arrangement that may secure .to each of the two electorates one representative in the Provincial Council chosen from amongst the mercantile men of the district. On this understanding, I have much pleasure 1 in €6iiiplylflg with your i^v.... . lad placing my' services a{ the disposal 6'f the' tticklote of hokitika ifioold they be disposed to endorse the judgßfe&i you have been pleased to place ttp'tfn tittft vfcftid;, As' it is tipon their support I depend for election, I witl tiske A Very early opportunity of explaining to them my political views.

Should I have the ouor to be elected, I will al .ways bear in mind that I am espccia Jly a re* pf esentative of the West Co- and that the "Weßt Coast is not the J least important division' of the Province j,or the one that calls for the lesser share of the general attention of the le; gislature. I have the honor t pbe Gentlemen, Your obliged and obedie nt servant, Thos. L, Beight. To Messrs. Jones, M'Gli whan and Co., Mark Sprot, Hender son and Uonav, and the other gentk men signing the requisition. /GENTLEMEN,— In reply to your requisition, I have the honor to inform you that I have very -. great pleasure in complying with your request, that I thould be allowed to b c put in nomination as one of your rej areßentatives in the Provincial Council } an id if elected, shall ,twe my best endeavon i t not only for the
