Yosterday morning a schooner hovo-to off the port, and communicated with the shore by signal. Sho proved to bo tho Viotoria, from Melbourne, bound to tho Gtroy, anu as Bhe is, wo believe, consigned to Messrs Spenco "Rros., tho Chollongo was at once despatched to tako her across the bar of that river.
The brigantiue Hector left Molbourne on the morning of Juno Ist, with light winds and fine weather. At 5 p.m. she cleared the Heads, and on the 3rd took her last departure from Swan Island, which then boro W. by 8. After a run of seven days, during which strong westerly breezes prevailed, Mount Cook was sighted on the 10th, when tho weather fell light and variablo, keeping her at sea until the 14th, on which date the services of the Challenge were accepted, and the wharf safely reached. The Hector brings a full general
As wo anticipated and feared, tho Maid of the Mill has become a total wreck, the surf of Wednesday night(although not particularly heavy) having carried away hor deck and starboard aide, and cleaved, away tko whole of her cargo of coals. Alongsido tho remaining portion of tho unfortunate old tub, hor mainmast lay in two pieces, whilst her foroward stick still towors aloft with tho tattered remnants of the sail, and broken gaff attachod to it. We mused as we gazed upon tho remarkable old tub, the innermost parts of which ■were thus exposed to view, and wondered at the temerity that could induce rational beings to trust themselves in Buch a miserable specimen of nayal architecture^ tho like of which save on canals and rivers, wo never Baw. There was no mistaking hor appearance : she was evidently intended for tho lightering trade, her bluff bow, bull stern, flat bottom, and tank like appearance, more than warranting such a supposition. We wore confirmed in this opinion by tho remarks which fell from an individual, an onlooker like ourselves who had evidently made hor acquaintance when she rested on less troubled waters than thoso of tho West Coast. From liim wo gathered that she was ono of three lighters which wore sent out from England to HobarfcTown, to ply on tho Dement, and that sho was never intended for a sea boat. The attention of tho Westlnnd trade however, induced her owners to send hor acrosa ; and the result has been that she has left her bones on tho beach, were many an old tub (which would be condemned as worthless elsewhere) have left theirs beforo her. The stranding of this vessel is, however, a very serious loss to hw owner and master Mr Taggart, who L not insured for ono penny, and we feel confident that all will join ■with us in regretting that so serious a calamity should have befallen him. At tho sanio time his life and the lives of his crew haro been preserved, which under a little less favourable circumstances - would in all probability have been sacrificed.
