Tho p.s. Bruco left for.Okarita at 8 p.m. yesterday, and safely crossed tho bar, notwithstanding tho darkness of tho night. As soon as sho was clear of tho break a gun was fired, for the purpose of certifying to those on shore she was all right. The Bruco takes away a full cargo, and a considerable number of passengers.
Tho P.N.Z. & A.R.M. Company's s.s Auckland, James Hagley, oommandcr, left Wellington at noon on tho 9th instant, and arrived at Nelson tho following day, at 3.30 a.m. Sailed for Groymouth at 5 a.m. on tho 11th, oft* which port she anchored at 8 a.m. tho next day, and being waited on by tho Persevere landed thirty-eight passengers, and then left for Hokitika, anchoring off tho bar at 2 p.m . tho same day. Throughout the passage fino weather was experienced. Tho Auckland brings 25 tons of cargo for this port.
Tho brig Cosmopolite sailed from HoWt Town on the 3rd inst., with northerly winds and fino vrcatlior. When clear of tho land tho w.ind shifted into tho NW., aud hence to Hokitika, which port sho sighted on tho 9th, strong gales from NW. to SW., attended by a heavy bcu, prevailed. Through a strong southerly set sho was unublo to roach tho roadstead until tho morning of tho 13th, when, in tow of tho Challenge, sho rcachod the wharf safely. Tho Coßmopo ".*• brings a mixed cargo of produce ; also inn-, .i^rses mid a number of ,pigs, all of which wore landed in good order.
Tho schooner Maid of tho Mill, coal laden left tho Grey River for this port on the 12lh instant, ana arrived in tho roadstead tho followiug morning. Hbr signal for a steam-tug was duly answered by tho Lioness, which fastened to hoy shortly after high water, and thon steamed for tho entrance, which was in a very fair condition, tho channel being straight and tho surf light. Both got fairly into the break without mishap j but, unfortunately, almost the first heavy jerk upon tho hawsor
snapped it, and iho sehoonor commonrcd drilling bodily towards tho beach. Tho Lioness, howovor, was quickly alongsido her, and passed another lino on board, but before the crow hud timo to fasten sho turned ahead, dragged it out of thoir hands, and beforo this unfortunate mistake could bo romedied tho Maid of the Mill was fairly in tho breakers that roll upon tho sand-bank running parallel to tho north beach, between which and tho shore is 0 shallow channel extending from tho Flagstaff to tho back of tho Empire Hotol. Seeing that tho water was comparatively smooth inside, tho schooner lot go hor anchor, and as her draught of water is light blio drifted, without touching, across tho bank, and for nearly throe hours rodo clear of tho ground, head to sea. Ilor situation, however, was most critical, although it was patent to ovoryono who saw her that wero it' only possible for tho steamer to stream a buoy, with a light lino attached, and thus put anothor hawser on board, bljo might bo saved. Tho Lioness, however, mado wo attempt to do soj but shortly after tho schooner anchored returned inside. About noon a light breeze sprung up, and tho Maid, sot hor canvas, hoping to work her way through tho break, but tho wind was so scant and light that sho was unablo to niako tho slightest hoadway against tho sea, wjuoh always breaks heaviest on tho ebb-tide-Up to this timo sho kept to hor anchor, but between noon and 1 p.m. tho chain snapped, and ftftor drifting somo distance to tho north sho was east on shore almost immediately at tho back of tho Shakespcro Hotel. Tho roceding tido soon left hor noarly dry, and her crow then left hor safely, but thoroughly wot and oxhauslod. Wo fear that tho Maid of Iho 31 ill (although sho is a strongly built- iron vobsoI) will never go to sea again, as sho is too far to tho northward to make tho overland passage, save at an enormous cxponso to hor owner and commander, Onptuin Tnggart j nnd launching her through tho surf is out of tho question, unless wo are favored with such woathor that at this soason of tho year can hardly bo expected. Wo much regret this untoward Gyenl, but especially tho unfortunate mistake that induced tho Lioness to turn ahead beforo (ho second warp was mado fast j for Cuptain Whitfovd (who kept alongsido until his own ' vessol touchod tho ground) assured us that ho saw tho* crow of tho sohoonor throw tho end ho just passed to them overboard, when of course ho thought it noodloas to ra\i any furthor risk, and acted accordingly. That this was a mistako there can bo no doubt, as tho captain of the schooner admitlod throwing a hawser ovorboard but which was only tho end of tho ono that parted, and not tho ono ho depended, on to save his tosbcl.
