It will bo Been from our advertising columns that a requisition has been presented to four gontlomon to allow thenisolvcs to be put in nomination for tho roprosontation of Westland in tho Provincial Oduncil, and that thoy havo signified thoir consent.

Owing to the continued suspension of tolographio communication with Christohuroh wo aro again without our usual telegrams.

An inquosfc was lIOW at tho Teromakau, by Dr. Boswick, tho district coroner,' on tho 11th instant, on tho body of tho man M'Cullum, who (as wo havo before stated) wbb killod by a fall of oavth whilst asleep in his tont. A, verdict of accidental death was returned. From tho evidence adducod, wogathortbafc ho was a native of county Tyrone, Ivolaud, and has loft bohind him proporty to tho amount of LlO5. J Yesterday, tho Gothenburg carried away with hor M.,000 ounces of gold dust, tho produce of tho Hokitika and Groy districts. This amount was Bhippod by tho Banks of Now Zoalaud and tho Union Bank, tho former contributing 12,050 ounces, 2000 ozs of which is Grey gold, and tho latter IQSO oz.

A meeting of tho inhabitants of North Rovoll streot was hold last night, at tho Lord Nolson Hotel, tho objocfc boing to decido upon what moasures would bo most offootive to eneuro tho immodiato improvement of tho streot by making up tho roadway and making good pathways. Mr Oummings being voted to tho chair, staled Iho reason why it waß convonod, and urged upon ifc the necosßity of prompt action, as tho stroet was not only next to impassible, but a roproaoh to tho rosidonts. Ho admitted thoy woro peculiarly situated on ac count of tho ponding municipality, but as it was uncertain whon the Council would bo formed, it was their duty to ondoavor, if posBiblo, to ascortain tho probable timo, and if thoy failed ho considcrod ifc advisable to at once collect subscriptions amongst themselves aud prococd with tho work. Tho amount thus oxpouded would doubtless bo rofundod by tho Council whon ifc was forraod. After somo further disoussion, ifc was proposed and carriod, « that a doputation should wait upon Mr Salo, in ordor to ascertain what action had beon token by tho Government for tho formation o£ a Town board $ when ifc was likoly that Municipal rulp would commenco in Hokitika." A committoo to also form tho doputation was then appointed, consisting of tho following gontlomon— Mossrs. Oummings, Humphrey, Moynoll, Lazarus, Powol and Haokott. Ifc wob docided that thoir report Bhould bo Bubmittod at a mooting, which should bo called at an caj'ly date.

On Sunday last an addross was presented by Mr Keonan, on behalf of tho Roman Catholic Congregation of Groymouth, to, tho Right Rev. Dr. Viard, Bishop of Wellington. Tho addross, whioh convoyod tho affectionate wishos of tho congregation, was prosontod at 12 o'clock mass, in tho Church, aud Dr. Viard acknowledged ifc in very fooling terms. It was signod by Messrs Koouan, Joyce, Griffin, Fitzgorald, M'Oonvoy, Smyth, Konnody, Shoody, Foppoly, Guorin, O'Dounell, M'Guirk, and sovoral others.

Wo notico that tho Hokitika and •Kaniori Tramway Company call for tenders # for sleepors, and that tho chairman of tho company gives notioo that a call of 10s por eharo has boon made, to bo paid on or bofovo tho 23rd ntt,

With roforonco to tho fato of Mr Dobson tho "Grey River Avgus" of yesterday eayss— " Thoro appoara to bo no othor conclusion tliat can bo arrivod at respecting tho fato of Mr Goo. Dobson, than that tho unfortunate gontloman baa boon foully murdorod. Tho circumstances attonding his disappearance forbid tho idea that ho has got lost \in tho bu6h, for ho was woll acquainted with the district, having himself out traverse linos through it not many months ago. Tho traok too which ho was last known to take is a well defined ono, and if ho had oven mot with a fall or othor accident ho would most certainly have beon found. A thorough examination has boon made of tho various routos whioh it might bo possible for him to havo takon, and strict enquiries havo boon instituted by tho police, but not tho remotest traco has beon obtained. It is suspcotod that his body, if murdorod, has boon buried somo distance back in tho bush, and it has boon suggested that a moro ininuto soaroh by a numerous party, assisted by dogs, would probably revoal tho mystery."

Tho torracos in tho neighbourhood of Caledonia Creek havo not proved so good as was oxpoctod, and until dry woollier, tho crook cannot bo worked extensively. At Wyndham Crcok the ground is proving very satisfactorily, and tho miners aro well contonted with their prospocts. Tho track rocontly commenced by tho Nelson Government across tho Baddlo has beon completed, and on the Puller sido great activity prevails. A township has beon formed at tho Inangahua, containing already nine stores, and two butchers' shops. Tho supplies aro mostly brought from tho Groy, across tho Saddle, as many as thirty pack-horaos having crossed hi ono day. Thoro appears to bo no probability of tho Bullor river competing with tho Groy as a routo for tho convoyauco of stores, as, owing to the rapidity of tho current, and tho dangerous nature of tho rapids, only cuiiqcb can bo used, and 'theso can only convoy a email quantity of goods. A fow loads havo beon brought by the Bullor routo, but tho cost of freight, £45 per ton, has effectually put a stop to tho t.'ado in that dirootion. Mr Wardon Kynnergley intends visiting tho Inangahua next week.

The enterprise displayod by a private company in tho heart of the town ought to excite shame in the Government for the scandalous indifforonco thoy have, first and last, displayod to the state of tho Btrcots. Ifc would bo only roasonable to lupposo that tho approaohos to its chief rosorvo, in vrhioh are erected tho piinoipal Government buildings, would at loast bo kept in a passablo condition, and not bo permitted to roraain kneo doop in mud. Wo aro, however, compelled in justico to stato, that not ovon aolfish considerations hare induced tho authorities to mend their ways 5 for Sowollstreet, which flanks ono sido of tho rosorvo, was ono of tho worst thoroughfares in town. Wo say " was," for during the last two days tho Unitod Company of Carters have boon busily omployod in forming a roadway by jaying down thick brushwood, and covoring ifc with oarth, on the top of which thoy intond depositing a good thickness of gravel. Tho improvement already effected is astonishing, considering the short timo thoy hafii beon at work, and we aro at a loss to concoivo how. the Commissioner can look tamoly on and sco those men at work without proffering to assist them. Suoh a proceeding on his part would only bo an aot of common justico, and ai\ aoknowlodgmout of tho service roudorod to the Governmont in improving its own spction. Tho Nelson " Colonist " soya that " During her last trip down to Waugaroa (a port botweon tho J3ay of Isfliuds and Mongonui), on the 30th March last, Captain Dolano, of the Ilira, had as passongora from Auckland, two young women, half-oastos, but who have beon brought up by and among Europeans. One of them was tho daughter of, tho late Mr Jamos Whitakor, and sho went down to Wnngaroa on a visit, having hoard of tho death of hor father. Tho other woman, also a half-oasto, accompanied Miss Whitaker as an attendant. Upon tho Hira loaving to Auokland, Miss Whitakor and hor companion wont on board, intending to roturn to thoir homo, but while tho vessel was boating down Wangaroa harbor sho was boarded by a canoe containing flfteon nativos, who, foroing thoir way down into tho cabin, soizod tho two womon, threw thorn into tho canoo, and oarriod thorn off to'tho Bottlemont. Captain Dolano, who bohavod most nobly in the affair, though having no moans of preventing tho abduction of tho women from tho ship, was determined that they should not, if possible, bo loft with thoir captors. He at onco landod, and having secured tho assistanco of a chief named Paul, followed tho natives and thoiv prisoners to tho settlement, and ultimatoly, through tho aid of Paul, and a payment of L 5 in money, resoued tho poor girls from tho horriblo fate in store for them, and got thorn on board the vosaol without, and made all Bail for Auoklaud} for ovon at this timo anothor party of nativos woro collecting in their boat on tho beach, for tho purposo of ovortaking the vessel and recapturing the womon. It is a great pity that the men-of-war lying in harbor do not occasionally take a trip round the eoesfc, showing themselves to the natives. At Wondaroa, for instance, tho natives aro very insolont and disorderly, and from tho simple fact, that thoy novor sco any ovidenco of British power. Did a man-of-war occasionally visit theso harbors on tho coast, the offecfc upon tho native mind would be a salutary one, and auoh visits would give confidence and support to the Bottlers. Wangaroa is a particularly noglooted district. Thoro is noithor a Magistrate nor a Justico of tho Peace in tho disMofr—no oonstablo, and not ovpn a Minister of any denQmtofttion." ' n '
