Wo regret that vessels in tho river out-ward-bound, aud tho Raugitoto, in WlO roadstead, bavo suffered a still further detention through the stato of tbo bar, on which, last night, so heavy a surf was breaking, that none of tho harbor boats would faoo it. It is truo that the Challenge, which ran out in tbo morning Fo tender tbo Albion, managed to re-cross inwards in tho afternoon, but not unattended with difficulty, and' hor report deterred tbo Kcera and Star of tbo Evening— both of which had steam up ready for starting — from leaving. Tho Lioness also (which bad beeu engaged to tako out passengers to th Rangitoto), not only bad steam up, but ho living freight shipped. Steam, however, wa blown off, and tbo latter re-landed. Wo trust that this mornings tido sees tho Keera and Lioness safely out of the river. Tho Star of {he Evoning will not sail until the afternoon.
Tho Molbourno " Argus" of tho 2nd inst., says, that tbo Govornmont steamer Pharos vrill proceed to-day to tho scone of- tbo wreck of tho barquo Ellen Simpson, for Ibo purpose of gloaning further information with regard to tho lost veßsol. Concerning the City of Hobart smuggling case, the Melbourno " Argus" of tbo 2nd inst. quotes from the Hobart Town " Morcuvy" (of May 29th), that the Executive Govornmont havo cowo to a decision upon tho lato smuggling case, in connexion with which the City of Hobart steamer and Brougbton's cab were bonded, to abido their verdict. We now learn, although it has not as yet boon officially notified, that tbo T.S.N. Company has been sentenced to pay a fine of £30, and the proprietor of tho cab a fine of £10.
We believe that the b.b. Gothenburg arrived laßt night from NeUon, for at about eight o'clock, tho roport of a gun was heard from the offing. We fear tjhat tho heavy sea of tho past fow days, has to a certain extent Bilted up tho bar, for tho Challenge reports that whon crossing last night, she dragged over tbo ground for a * considerable distance She certainly ran in an hour before high wdtor, but ovon at that timo of tido, tboro Bhould havo been suflioicnt depth to bavo floated a vessel of her draught. Tho A.S.N. Company's s.s. Albion, E. Kidney, commander, left; Port Philip Heads at 6 a.m. on tho 3rd instn : with westerly breezes and fine weather 5 aud after a splendid run of 4 days 14 hours and 15 minutes, arrived off Hokitika at 8.15 p.m. on the 7th. Owing, however, to thick weather, sho did not anchor until 3 a.m. on the 9th. During the passago N.W. winds provailod. Tho Albion brings a goneral oargo for this port, and 98 pasaengers.
